Currently, there are over 100 members with more than 1,000,000 points, and at the top level for car icons. We would like to recognize the contributions of the top point earners. Would you like to see more car icons/point levels on this web site?
Yes, we need more points levels
No, we don't need more points levels
No opinion

Post your thoughts about this poll below.

Yes.

They should vary the colors as well. All the icons for the higher points are red. At one point we will have mostly red cars! It will look boring!

MooseFM:
Thanks for your concurrence; in the past only a handful of the top members have ever thought it necessary to respond to this question. Most members can't tell you the different levels at which icons change, nor can they tell you what icon stands for what point level.

It's a good system that's worked because, in part, it's relatively simple. Why bother to change it, especially since the overwhelming number of people saying they need icons are not those who've been here and who've crossed the million point threshold, but rather are those who've either just joined (and have only a couple gas price posts and only a couple of message posts - if that many - under their belt) or who've been long-time members who've never gotten around in the six months, year, or two years they've been members, to posting any gas prices and/or messages (based on their "points" levels, for which they want to have more of, despite their limited participation).

I am new to this site. How a person is rated (ie. how many points they have) does not take away from the important information available here. When I come here to look up prices and more, I don't care who supplied the information, just that it is there!

I think the 100+ people should be the ones to ask for more icons, not the rest of us! If they want them, then give it to them. If they are happy to contine to provide this valuable information without any additional recognition, then that's fine too!

Thanks to all of you who have been providing this information. Whether they decide to create more icons or not, keep up the great work!

It doesn't appear that the folks "at the top" bother to respond (with only a couple of exceptions over the past several years; it appears that those with the 1,000,000 points - as well as those with 2,000,00 or more, are satisfied with the way it is.

The majority of people saying there needs to be more point levels are the newest members, who, in some cases are making this one of their first message posts, and often before they've done more than a few gas price posts (if that many); it seems that they believe there needs to be more recognition and levels without having made any significant input. And, quite a few of them believe that the newest members should get an icon so they don't feel left out; it doesn't seem that participation to the website is as important as having your anonymous screen name being recognized as... as, I guess, that you're a member.

If more levels encourages the folks "at the top" to continue with their dedication, then by all means, give them more icons. I am new, and don't even have a car icon yet, but I am happy to have this website which taught me that I could drive 5 miles accross the river and save 20 cents per gallon on gas.

Damaging? Uh... you may not like and I may not like it, but what about all the people in "our country" that are reaping the benefits of the money "the money these oil companies are making", such as individual investors and employees, etc., who participate in funds programs. Seems that they may not like the price of gas individually but they won't turn down the investment dividends.

Seems as low as gas prices are, there may be other prices to be more concerned about.

opaliscute:
And the points is? Granted, there aren't a lot of levels, but doesn't that make achieving them more significant? Or is the purpose of this website to see how many "freinds" you can make, like on Facebook, etc.

lidude25:
Not really; it takes about a week and a half to get your first icon/reach your first level, and then the rest come at periodic times, after you're contributed to the website; perhaps significantly after you reached one level before you get to the next level, but so what? Isn't the ultimate achievement more important than getting something just because you posted for a couple days, or made a couple message posts, often (actually, for most people) one word or one number posts? Isn't a little bit of participation worth the effort?

Too many reporters are drive-bys. For some goofy reason, most stations post curbside signs at X dollars and pump price is usually 3&1/2 cents lower. Who knows why? But the point is that the drive-by reporters give misleading information, so effectively, a drive-by report is useless information. These reporters are just trying to pile up points for some unknown reason.

I just joined today and admittedly don't know anything about the points. That being said, I don't really care about the points either. All I'm interested in is checking for the most economical place to buy my gasoline and hopefully helping others in the process. Our economy is hurting right now and if there is anyway I can save money and help others save too, I'm all for it.

Being on top, gaining recognition, and begging for someone to notice me are things I've never been much interested in.

I am pretty new here as you can see. I recently got my first car icon. When I was a few hundred points short of my first car, I saw the forums that were just to post on to get points. Admittedly I grabbed a few that way to get my first car icon so that I could access the master station list. But having said that, the ability to post repeatedly for nothing just to get points really takes away from the credibily of the points system. I think that it needs to be set up that only a legitimate posts earns points.

The consecutive days "wings" are simply another way that people can show that they're "dedicated" contributors to the website. A number of people have posted without break for over five years.

To me, and I may be in a minority, there are other things to do in life besides being obsessed with posting anonymously on a website (and yes, I know that I've posted continually for over a year with the same excuse many people use people - I'm on the computer for work and it only takes a couple minutes...). However, there are many people who have posted that they were worried they might not be able to post for one reason or another, that they would lose their consecutive streak, that they'd never be able to be near the leaders, etc. There's Christmas, there are birthdays, there's life and there's death; all a lot more important than "wings". But, apparently, this website is apparently important to a large number of anonymous members.

On that note, HailstormCA, welcome back.

Getting Back to Gas Buddy: Years ago I connected with GasBuddy, but I then associated with a more local group. I enjoyed supporting them and got nothing for the time with GasBuddy, and I currently have gotten nothing for the other association. And didn't think I needed it. The other site has been out of service as it once was so I've come back to GasBuddy as a new member. And it is a bit different now, or I just never bothered learning it all then. There are many more features here that make it enjoyable and I do have a passion for reporting. I'd regularly reported for over 30 stations (some of which never made it to the database) and I'm not going to stop just cause two stations (6 prices) would fill my daily quota. And I do notice the two stations I can walk to aren't even in GasBuddy.com YET!

As you can tell, I'm not one to just put in a one word or letter post just for points. I will admit to wanting to reach 10k quickly, but learning all about the site and where my comfort level is is more important than points. I've noticed there's something about consecutive days. Is there something special that makes it important?

BTW CheapFuel4u2, I'm a newbie also and feel the same. But, at the same time I see the reasoning behind it, i.e. we're new and how well can we be trusted and it's an incentive to get us out there finding prices.

Either local reporting websites or GasBuddy.com nationally can spring for them. After all, they're getting a lot of labor for nothings, but still selling advertising on the websites. And, maybe, just maybe, the point totals could reset at some point as coins are earned and the number of coins a member has is displayed. It still shows accomplishment.

Grteat idea HailstormCA?
That said, are you donating the coins, or will CoinsForAnything donate the coins?

Remember, this isn't something that people are doing publicly, posting gas prices. They join anonymously, post a couple gas prices so other people know what gas is selling for and so they don't have to spend more than necessary. And those people are posting gas prices too.

You don't think that looking out for each other is enough? People need to get gifts for being anonymous and posting one word or one number responses in a message thread?

cheapfuel4u2:
To follow-up jjdm's accurate post, the stripes simply indicate that you've participated for 90 or more consecutive days. It's just a way of showing people that you're committed to activities on the website.

You get your first icon at the 10,000 point mark; that's to ensure that you at least contribute a little before you're given recognition, and it's a way of not giving recognition as a participant to those people who join, make a gas and a message post and then don't do anything else (and may not even lurk in the background getting the benefits of other members posting gas prices).
You earn or acquire 150 points a day for each gas price post you make (up to a maximum of 750 points a day (if you post more than five gas prices you don't get extra points but your fellow drivers and gas buyers appreciate your extra contributions); you get 25 points for each of the five posted news articles you read in a given day; you get 20 points for each message you post a day (such as your message here), up to a maximum of 100 points a day, and you get 100 points for voting in the weekly poll. You already received 100 points for joining, and if you refer other members to this website, you can earn additional points for each person you refer, up to 1,200 points. Bottom line is you can easily earn 975 points a day, 7 days a week, and and additional 100 points a week for the poll voting.

Not hard to get 10,000 points and an icon.

cheapfuel4u2 -

You have to wait 90 days for the stripes behind the back of your car. You will be able to get you car in about 2 weeks if you post at least 5 prices, read the recent news, and post 5 posts per day. Then vote once a week in the opinion poll.

I'm new, but I don't see why you'd need more levels. I also don't understand why you have to wait 90 days for your first icon. Not having an icon locks you out of some very basic capabilites, like pulling up the master station list...what's with this????

I thought I'd come here before voting to see if there was some good reason for additional levels. I've newly gotten back into this and don't have an icon yet. But I haven't seen one convincing post as to WHY we need more levels - at least more at the top. The one about letting you choose once you get to a certain level is a good idea.

Gas Buddy, you're right. In one sense this is "Much ado about nothing." But if it encourages more folks to post, then it may be worthwhile to re-structure the points levels, and their corresponding icons. As with you, I just want to see postings that are on my route, and no more than 8 hours old. That's the real value of this (these) gasbuddy site(s).

What we need more than people who've been here a while saying we need more point levels is more people posting prices. After all, you're already anonymous, why not participate for the purpose of the website (to help others learn the least expensive places to shop) rather than not participate but concurrently suggest that there be more point levels. If you're not going to participate very much, what difference does it make?

I'm basically looking for the cheapest gas price within my daily driving routes. So if you have a zillion points or 500 points it really makes no difference to me as long as we are all fighting for the same ticket. Lower Gas Prices!!!
If you have those individuals who must be on top, then allow them to have a different color, shape whatever they choose. Just keep communicating where the cheapest gas is...

I think once you reach certain stages/levels, you should be able to choose the icon you want. I'm somewhat color blind so a car is a car is a car regardless of the color. The different type icons I can identify with. Over all though I agree w/daffyone.

BlackJack21:
Doesn't it make some sense to award the prizes, however few there are year, to those tht have contributed a little extra? That is, a little more than the minimum? Besides, with little effort you can earn 35,000 points in about one month; 975 points per day is achievable. All that is is five gas posts per day (or one gas price posted five different times a day, open the five news articles, and send five message posts. Takes you all of several minutes. Plus you get points for voting in the weekly poll.

Doesn't seem like asking people to contribute a little bit is asking too much before you give them the opportunity to participate in the drawings.

That said, they're not monthly; they're about three times a year.

But, daffyone is correct that the primary purpose here should be about helping each other, not getting icons or points for posting things anonymously.

You could add multiple car icons for the high-scorers. This isn't the same as adding more cars for higher scorers. (Since it seems that developers have a one car graphic spot - the graphic spot could be moved, enlarged and enhanced.) Sound, motion, optional graphics could provide enhancements as prizes.

Nice system - although I am one who would post gas prices just to participate I can see that the point system is motivating and fun. I'm not sure what your prizes are yet.

I think the scale could be adjusted. Just change the value given to each icon to reflect the intended status.

Just my opinion.

It would seem that you'd be inclined to post gas prices for the same reason that you would like others to post gas prices; so that everyone knows the price of gas at various gas stations in the area you drive, in order that you can make more intelligent choices about where you should buy gas.

As for the icons and points, all they do is provide a frame of reference as to how much you've contributed; the more gas prices you post (since you get more points for gas price posting than anything else), the quicker you achieve different point levels, and the quicker you obtain new/different car icons (different car icons for different point levels).
And, you can use those points to obtain "tickets" for the thrice-annually drawings for free gas.

Personally, I'd be more inclined to post gas prices because it helps the next guy in his or her shopping; and if I post gas prices for him or her, they might post more gas prices for my benefit. I'm not "more inclined" just because there might be some benefits for my anonymous posting. I'm more inclined because I give a damn.

I like the way it is set up now, however I have seen established members with car icons posting inaccurate information that seems to override accurate information that I just posted. It makes me think that some stations are establishing themselves as members and then posting bad info in order to draw the masses. New members should be able to correct inaccurate info.

I don't like how as the rankings increase, so do the size of the vehicles. It implies that gas-guzzlers are in some way better than economy cars. Upside down thinking, donchya think???
