The Arctic sea ice cap measured by satellite pictures this year appeared to reach its maximum winter size on Feb. 25, the NASA-supported Snow and Ice Data Center reported. At 5.61 million square miles (14.54 million square kilometers), this year’s maximum ice cover was the smallest on the record and also one of the shortest durations.
