Research and luck. Both of my buildings (3200' and 2000' metal) have south facing roofs. I knew a company that was going to install solar and I contacted them. The result was that I, a few other people, and the company did a large buy of the panels. We all self installed them. Cost of the panels was .53 per watt. Rather than just putting up wind generators where I wanted to, I did a real wind survey over a 70 day period and found the correct placement for the units. I installed 8 ea 1.5KW turbines - start speed at 6.8 MPH. Turbines were about 1200 each. All of the above plus installation costs (wire, etc.) and I did most of the labor myself with a helper. With tax breaks, etc. I'm good . Most of the day the meter(s) are running backwards. So, with my sell back credit my total electric bill - house (2800') and shops, is normally 0$ and the worst was $18.37 Hope this helps.
