Welcome back!!!!

"When are people going to learn that the corn used for ethanol is not the kind of corn you would want to eat? It is a completely different type of corn. I will agree that most vehicles have definate problems using ethanol, but for that reason we should be remodeling the engines to work with such and not blame the price of corn at the market on the use of field corn that is used on ethanol." It's not just that. I'd rather make ethanol from waste product. I'd rather that corn for food is grown in place of the corn for fuel. I'd rather we used grasses and grain sorghum for ethanol and get more of it and remove the subsidies. I'd rather we used more natural gas, methanol, hydrogen and others as well. We could be as a whole, and some do that individually.

"I don't find it ridiculous, GoBlazers. In fact, I would add that people need to make better use of their feet and do more walking and riding bicycle to get around instead of using their vehicles to go a 100 yards down the road to buy a hamburger. It not only would save on gas, it would get them at least some exercise to burn off the added obesity." Spaseeba/Mesi/Tankje/Kiitos/Ahgradasiki/Thank you! It's true! The extra weight on a person or persons is no different from extra weight on vehicles and reduces mileage accordingly and something I've been telling others about for at least five to eight years. Doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure things out, just like increasing fuel economy, deafeating Shinzon and his Reman warbird could have been done a lot quicker and easier as well!

Here's to a Healthy, Prosperous and Great 2010. I spent many years working in the Petrochemical industry. Almost everything we produced or used in the process was listed on EPA's Haz Mat list. I totally disagree about health risk from living near or working inside refineries or petrochemical plants. There has been law suites but that's because of greedy lawyers and greedy people. Those lawsuits made lawyers richer and increased cost to consumers. I'm 75, worked in all areas of petrochemicals for 32 years, been retired for 20 years and in perfect health. And most of those years working were before EPA or OSHA was invented.

You raised a valid point about "Health risks stack up for students near industrial plants" I know it is a stretch but I thought the public safety issue in relation to refinery pollution related to addressing the need for clean energy in the clean energy clause in the GB submission guidelines " Articles should be on the topics of gas prices, crude oil, clean energy, fuel efficient vehicles or related automotive articles." I also thought it related to the prices by the likelihood of those Houston Refineries and petro- chemical plants lawsuits settlements costs translated to higher prices passed on to the consumer to preserve the profits of the oil company. You can try to submit a story and look at the guidelines yourself. http://www.winnipeggasprices.com/Suggest-News-Article.aspx
