You asked in your post, "Does anybody know how much of the price is from state taxes?" It depends on the state, and there is a confusing chart on this website about each state at http://www.californiagasprices.com/tax_info.aspx. The feds add 18.4 cents per gallon. In CA, the total state taxes are 50.6 for gas and 55.1 cents for diesel. In your state of NY, gas tax is 51.2 and diesel tax is 50.7. They say the actual tax dedicated as gas tax is less than these numbers because they add on sales taxes, excise taxes, maintenance fees, etc., but these should still be considered gas taxes because they are there because it is additional taxes/fees going to the state for the purchase of gasoline. NY and CA have the highest gas taxes in the country. This means for 15 gallons of gasoline, we are paying more than $10 in taxes to the state and feds.
