I don't remember the range anymore, but they used them in Viet Nam to spot rounds for the battleship. They mounted a TV camera with a zoom lens to the hard points where the torpedos were hung. They would fly it tracked by radar to the target area & hover so they could view the target area. It was small enough & high enough so it could not be seen as is was so small. There a TV monitor in the fire control central so the weapons officer could adjust his rounds in real time. Worked like a charm and didn't require a spotter to be physically there! There system was known as "DASH", Drone Anti-Submarine Helicopter!

Having fun is good advice any day, you do the same.

It is a QH-50D, co-axial drone helicopter used by the Navy in the sixties for anti-submarine protection. It was a stop-gap stand-off attack system while the Navy was installing the ASROC system on destroyers. This bird could carry 2 MK-44 or 1 MK-46 anti-submarine torpedos. It had a 300 hp Boeing jet engine, could lift and carry almost it's own weight, which was close to 1200 lbs. and fly in combat 100 kts+ and it was a "Drone"
