I'm somewhat familiar with RTCA DO-178B, an earlier version of the FAA requirements for computer software on aircraft. When we did the International Space Station software, we first made sure inputs resulted in the expected results. Then, as things went on, we got the time to go do very thorough testing My code was pretty good, the main slip-up I found was that there was a line of code that could never be executed. The developers were able to fix the tests, but we had to go to NASA to get code changes on the bucket list scheduled. Unfortunately, NASA's money ran out before the bucket list did.
