You raise an interesting pont and set of questions.
I think it is correct that there is an element of human nature that requires leaders and followers. It certainly seems that as a leader ascends, s/he becomes more interested in expanding the power base, and that often requires "force" of one kind or another, hence the many unnecessary wars. In humans' most primative time, the stronger "warrior" type ruled the weaker, and we have really not escaped that paradigm.
