If you are interested, please sign the petition to have our Government stop using Social Security Numbers as Medicare ID numbers. This is a very legit effort.
.
Please join in asking Washington to change this policy and protect our seniors’ identities!
.
There is more information on the Petitions Whitehouse.gov site. (link above)

The problem with just saying no -- They needed my Medicare number to bill Medicare and that number is my SS. Actually everyone's Medicare number is their SS. That is why the system needs to change.
FYI--The petition is now closed and, unfortunately, did not get the required number of supporters.

AC-302 -- I did not know that HIPAA rules also say you don't have to give out your SS number. I'm going to try that next week. Thanks.

I've noticed that many doctors and other organizations attempt to use SS numbers as ID. I have a military ID, and use the ID number from that, not even from my driving license. When the care providers object, I tell them that those HIPAA rules also say I don't have to give my SS number, nor should they need it. They can have my mil ID all they want - they can't do anything with that number.

A good idea is to make a photo copy of your Medicare card, black out the number and photo copy that. Carry the blacked out photo copy in your wallet.

SE3.5 -- Looked at the bill. Hope he gets support and it passes. In the meantime, we can show our support but getting more signatures on the petition. Coming at this issue from different approaches might help to actually get this done.

Nick he does. And he has plenty of help. Almost all of my docs are computerized. Just my Primary refuses to do it. He says he never will.

"The same process is used at the VA.
They ask for your last name and the last four numbers of your Soc. Sec. number."

And then they drop it in the shredder. <<rimshot>>

>>In filling out the forms I had to give my SS# on all five pages.<<

Sounds like your endocrinologist needs to start using computers. You should only have to enter any piece of information one time.

Hope you signed the petition btc1.
Actually, I have left it off the form the last time a medical place asked for it and I was still seen. I've heard that this will not work all the time, but it is worth a try.

I went to an endocrinologist for the first time yesterday. In filling out the forms I had to give my SS# on all five pages. I do not like this. A SS# was never to be used as an ID#. Never, by law.
