"KG, you could always try composting those leaves"

.....

16 tons of leaves from 45 acres of hardwood timber...not hardly!

I do compost a considerable amount of the leaves for the two acre garden and rototill into the soil but when the volume gets to be that which we must deal with, there's no alternative...besides the ash from the burn-off are high in nutrient for the soil as well.

I'm not aware of a single property owner throughout the area where there's large acreage of timber that doesn't burn off...just the way it is in the rural farming communities.

Just like our trash...what we can't burn we bury.

KG, you could always try composting those leaves, just a little wire panel fencing would work and the worms especially LOVE leaves. I compost my kitchen trash all year and use the resulting compost/worm casting for the spring gardening.

We put away stuff....lawn ornaments, planters, and the like........I feel a northerly wind.

"Morning all....Chicago is prepping for the arrival of Potus"

.....

Probably a primary reason for his visit is checking in with his pal Mayor Emanuel to see what Community organizer jobs may be available after next year.

Morning all...rainy day today so it's another hang around the house day with Momma and enjoy some comfort food.

Was going to start burning leaves today but the rains have pretty much quelled that notion for the next several days as things start drying out again.

Take care and have a great day...KG

Good morning, every Buddy!

Cold and rainy here today.

I keep hearing the same reports, jdhelm, about another brutal winter.

I am SO glad that global warming is here!

Can you imagine how cold it would be without it?

we're seeing a very large flock of robins here within the last hour, apparently they are telling us winter is coming sooner than we think? uffda. we have a large bradford pear and it started dropping leaves in early august, indicating a hard winter. so apparently we're in for an early and cold hard winter - again. we lost all of our red bud trees, all of our butterfly bushes and a few roses because of the hard and very deep freeze last winter. the frost was 7-8 feet around here in some places.

Only in 'farm' country.

a couple of FFA boys brot 3 goats to high school 1 day and turned them loose in the building. before they did, they painted a number on the side of each goat = 1, 2, and 4.

the principal canceled school for 2 days looking for #3.

180 degrees - south:-My grandpa used to sell milk after he retired from farming. One day, one of his customers where he stopped, was a young woman in her 40's and she had ordered 50 gallons of milk.

That's a lot of milk, grandpa said; what will you be using it for?

She replied: I'm going to take a bath in it.

Grandpa asked: Do you want it pasteurized?

Se responded: No, just up to my chin.

se, yea, I like that mini's lasted a lot longer than yours or mine... I tried to convince her and argued that a fridge should last longer... guess who won that arguement (it really was more a discussion... I know better to argue with her)... even when i think i win... i lose...

yes, new one is white... old one was bisque (sore subject for mrs.) she refused to get stainless steel (though our sink is stainless steel).. but she explained that ... that's different.... yes dear.... :-)I agree mini... so true.. I didn't dare ask if the eggs were replaced... i'll ask tonight when we go pick up our frozen food from son's house (freezer)... minus the ice cream treats of course...

maryanne... yea, ice is working :-) ... they said to dump out 1st batch of ice made... should be interesting...

TD: "Refrigerators are certainly the hot topic for today!"

Punny. It was certainly a 'hot' (and smelly) topic around here two years ago. ;)

SE: ""They" tell me the new one will use less electricity."

They told me that also. They also said not to expect 20 years out of the new refigerator - not even 10 years. (Same with the new and 'improved' energy-efficient washers & driers.)

Good Morning.

We swapped out a 10 year old side by side frig for a three door a couple of weeks ago, because the defrost cycle stopped working. "They" tell me the new one will use less electricity.

Okay reb, got it - that one is bisque colored, not white.

Re: downsizing, the one thing bad about the new refrigerator is that the freezer is smaller - the 20-year-old fridge had a huge amount of freezer space - I couldn't find one with the same cubic feet to fit the custom space that the cabinets had been built around to match the old one, and I wasn't going to get into rearranging cabinet space just for a refrigerator replacement at that time. You know how it goes - when a fridge goes out, you need to get a refrigerator, now. :-D

New fridge installed this morning (expedited shipment)... wife went shopping.. I hooked up the water hookup when i got home... not leaking too bad (just kidding)... toughest part was finding teflon tape which was not where I expected it... but likely where i put it... We had a Whirlpool model that they called side by side but it was

unique design offering wider section for freezer on bottom...
Oh well... need to down size...(except for holiday)...

Morning all!
Hate the thought of coming back home from a trip and finding the refrigerator kaput reb4...feel for ya!

We're lucky in that while we travel regularly throughout the year our close friends and neighbor on the farm just up the road from us checks out the house and property daily for us so we don't have surprises to come back home to.
As JoAnne and I winter at our homestead in Arizona from the end of December through the 1st of April, two years ago our refrigerator in the kitchen shut down and fortunately our neighbor caught it in the morning when checking the place and called for our service people and were able to fix the problem which turned out to be minor.

We've certainly busy now with the leaves as they've really started falling now and much of the day is spent pulling the leaf vac around behind the John Deere and establishing burn rows which we'll get under way this week barring unforeseen winds.

Off to breakfast and then on to the task at hand...hope everyone has a great week...beautiful Indian Summer going on here and the colors are awesome!
