"Suicide Rates by Geographic Region/State

In 2010, suicide rates were highest in the West (13.6), followed by the South (12.6), the Midwest (12.0) and the Northeast (9.3). Six U.S. states, all in the West, had age-adjusted suicide rates in excess of 18: Wyoming (23.2), Alaska (23.1), Montana (22.9), Nevada (20.3), New Mexico (20.1) and Idaho (18.5). Four locales had age-adjusted suicide rates lower than 9 per 100,000: New York (8.0) and New Jersey (8.2) in the Northeast, and Maryland (8.7) and the District of Columbia (6.8), in the Southeast (Figure 6)."

More suicides occur in cities because more people live there.

"What that "traumatic experience" is in most cases is a one-night stand."

Wow, are you a Tea Party Senate candidate? You'd fit right in. Our bodies have ways of shutting that whole thing down, too.

Most of the suicides occur in cities, which are primarily blue...Though frankly this report has very little to do with politics, other than some spin from posters that spend to much time on politics ....

By the way the number one city for suicides is Las Vegas... but hardly can say that has any indication of politics. Many other factors involved there.

urban locations are primarily blue, which is where most suicides occur

" What that "traumatic experience" [rape] is in most cases is a one-night stand."

Women who have been raped and sexually abused carry the scars with them their entire life. Many struggle with normal relationships and self destructive lifestyles. Calling rape a one night stand attempts to soften a horrible life-defining event. Making a statement such as yours would be a candidate's fast track to losing an election.

Foisting values such as this on the public may help explain why suicide rates are higher in red states.

I don't want anyone to feel so constrained and hampered in this crowded world that is they think they should kill themselves. There is always a better way.

" I just as frequently say that population control does not require killing."

Suicide isn't killing. How do you know that some of these suicides weren't for the greater good of population control liberalism?
Seems to me controlling population voluntarily with a suicide is better than involuntary sucking a life out of womb.
At least the suicide person had a choice.

SemiSteve said: "you have someone who is forced to raise an illegitimate child and to be constantly reminded of a horrible traumatic experience for the rest of their life."

First of all, no one is forcing anyone to raise children. There are plenty of people who are anxious to adopt babies.

Second, there are far more incidences of mothers who are traumatized by their decision to abort their babies then there are of women whose children only remind them of "some traumatic experience". What that "traumatic experience" is in most cases is a one-night stand. You've got some real mental problems if you can look at an innocent child's face and ONLY see the circumstances that brought that child into the world.

"Aren't you always claiming we need population control?"

--And if you were really paying attention you would also see that I just as frequently say that population control does not require killing. All that is necessary is to control the amount of births. We have the technology. We are stupid as a species not to use it more prudently. In this respect we are no smarter than rats.

Perhaps the explanation for the higher suicide rates in red states lies in the more stringent constraints placed on society by conservatives. With fewer things being approved of there are less ways for people to enjoy themselves. Perhaps they feel that life is not worth living under such circumstances.

As an example think of the following. Someone gets raped and because of conservative law they are not allowed to have an abortion. So then you have someone who is forced to raise an illegitimate child and to be constantly reminded of a horrible traumatic experience for the rest of their life.

Didn't all three of the states on our Western shore go for President Obama? Not exactly super red states, there.

Well, last I heard "red states" weren't entirely "red". Rates may be higher, but who are the ones committing suicide? Is it the liberals who can't cope with the pressure of a bit more morality than they can tolerate?

And with the high murder rate in the liberal utopia of Chicago, who has time to commit suicide before you get gunned down?

tower: "Aren't you always claiming we need population control? "

Perhaps we need additional data on who is committing suicide, conservatives or liberals, or perhaps better yet (although deliciously politically incorrect) are those committing suicide predominately the ones paying the taxes, or the ones on the dole.

I wonder which is greater, the number of suicides in the entire country, or the number of murders in Chicago?

"ST. PAUL — Minnesota’s suicide rate has hit the highest point in a decade . . .

Suicides jumped 13 percent in 2011, to 684. That equaled a rate of 12.4 per 100,000 residents and was the highest since the early 1990s, the Minnesota Department of Health said.

The agency said much of the increase came in middle-aged men, and was highest within that group among men 55 to 59."

Fear not Tim I am sound. I think many of those states have a "take care of yourself" philosophy. Maybe a caring and "helping" government does improve lives.

One of my brothers that spent a lot of time working in remote areas of the US had many bouts with deep depression due to isolation.

It probably has to do with the idea that they are working and supporting the rest of the country. Or maybe it is liberals in the state that realize they are burden on the rest of the state that is working?

We've known many that have committed suicide due to the snowball effects of the poor economy - job losses, eviction, foreclosure, tax seizure, repossession, exhausted savings/credit, separation/divorce, depression, drinking, drugs, hopelessness etc.

That's kind of an odd site to bring up in Politics, worryfree. How did you come across it? I'm concerned for you.

With your age and health profile, you fit the demographic. I apologize in advance if I'm way off base here, but never too careful. We need you around here, buddy!

The suicide figures are very disturbing.

Interesting that the most common method of death by suicide is firearm... more than double the rate of the next most common method... and the most common demographic is white, middle-aged male.

Why is the teen suicide rate so high in Utah?

Gay youths being encouraged to stop being gay or kill themselves??

Note that this area is referred to as the "suicide belt".

I eagerly await our cons attempts to explain how these numbers are wrong or it has nothing to do with Republicans or it's only the liberals in these states that are killing themselves or it's Obama's fault.

I think it's because they're lonely in those wide open spaces. Some people like that, but for some people, that's tough.

I think it's that doom and gloom attitude that seems to emanate from Red areas.
Just look at some of the threads posted here on GB from those areas.

Always with a negative vibe to them.

Most aren't positive in any way and the only displays of joy come at the expense of others they dislike.

Just a miserable way to go through life.
