Ms Merkel spoke to President Barack Obama over the phone on Wednesday to seek clarification after Germany said it had "received information that the chancellor's cellphone may be monitored by American intelligence".

The Chancellor's spokesman, Steffen Seibert, said the German chancellor told Mr Obama that "she unequivocally disapproves of such practises, should they be confirmed, and regards them as completely unacceptable".

"Between close friends and partners, as Germany and the US have been for decades, there should not be such monitoring of the communications of a government leader," he said.

"This would be a grave breach of trust. Such practices should be immediately stopped."

"According to The Washington Post, the White House is considering appointing a civilian to lead the NSA. If you are interested in the job, there is no need to submit a résumé, they have all your information already."

gocat - I'm not opposed to your proposal. However, mobilizing troops on our Southern border might be considered "racist" by La Raza, the government of Mexico, and people of Mexican or South American descent..

"Those that fear their phones being tapped could be talking to terrorists. I say tap away."

Chances are good that all of your to and from numbers and their locations have been recorded.
The NSA has already admitted as much.
Are you a terrorist?

Ac, the problem politicians have with withdrawing the troops is the fear of another Hitler or Stalin (;0). For the life of me I see no reason Germany can't defend itself. I'd like to see our troops defending our Southern borders.

Here comes another wedgie:

The National Security Agency has found a way to circumvent the encryption process between Yahoo/Google's public Internet and cloud encryption through a program codenamed MUSCULAR, reports Barton Gelmann of the Washington Post.

"It looks to me like the power of that office is so intoxicating that few can imagine how they will act with all that responsibility."

Cmon man. He is who he is.

"Obama has surprised me in many ways."

Not me. All you had to do was was research him properly to know all of this is hardly out of character for someone like him.

"I have to admit I totally did not expect this. I feel violated for helping to elect him."

You act as if you weren't warned.
You were.
Repeatedly.
You ignored everybody and every shred of evidence thrown your way and professed to swoon over Obamas books.
I am glad I won't have to explain to my children and grand children why this man was allowed to occupy 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

To me, this is the worst thing Obama has ever done. I have to admit I totally did not expect this. I feel violated for helping to elect him. I fail to understand why he thinks this is helpful.

It looks to me like the power of that office is so intoxicating that few can imagine how they will act with all that responsibility.

Obama has surprised me in many ways.

I don't like his cozy thing with Wall Street, the use of drones that creates more terrorists, and I don't like this spying thing.

I doubt I will EVER support a major-party candidate again.

This two-party system which forces me, in a swing State, to support one to keep the other out totally stinks!

I want nation-wide instant-run-off voting, and I want the debates opened up to all candidates, and I want hardball questions in the debates, and a moderator that calls out responses which don't anser the questions as bogus!

And get the big money the heck out of politics.

From GasBuddy news this morning:

Feds planning black box vehicle mandate to track, tax and even remotely control all personal vehicle (www.infowars.com & LA Times)

Orwell was wrong. They won't use your TV to keep track of you. They will use your car.

Face it. The Obama Administration got caught spying on other world leaders. The USA has lost respect around the world because of it.

Things that make you go Hmmm:

"Cheney suggests there is an interest in conducting surveillance on a country or a leader, even a clear ally.

"We do have a fantastic intelligence capability, worldwide against all kinds of potential issues and concerns. We are vulnerable, as was shown on 9/11, and you never know what you're going to need when you need it," said Cheney.

"We do collect a lot of intelligence. Without speaking about any particular target or group of targets, that intelligence capability is enormously important to the United States, to our conduct in foreign policy, to defense matters, economic matters, and I'm a strong supporter of it," said Cheney."

I wonder how many here who are trashing Obama secretly agree with Darth, aka Cheney???

"If Barrack H Obama gassed a few folks, you'd be excusing it because Adolph Hitler did it in the 1940's. "

Right. But he hasn't.

He hasn't taken away your guns.

He hasn't eliminated the constitution.

He hasn't invalided the 2nd amendment.

And a host of other things that you righties keep saying he's doing or gonna do.

No, I'm not gonna get on that blame Obama for everything from burnt toast, to marital problems to destroying america.

But you have at it all you want.

What I want to read is you condemning something this President does without having to equivocate it saying others did it first. It isn't going to happen. If Barrack H Obama gassed a few folks, you'd be excusing it because Adolph Hitler did it in the 1940's.

"No! You and a collection of other liberals on this forum respond to every issue involving this President by finding a way to blame Bush or Republicans. You never just outright condemn the behavior. "

Yes!

For years I've been saying it doesn't matter who the president is or what his party affiliation is, the spying was wrong...even when republicans defended it as ok and necessary.

But what I won't do is join you guys in blaming Obama for everything under the sun, including why your wife burnt the toast or why the bathroom is flooded.

That's YOUR train, so ride it on to the end of the line...but don't get mad because I don't jump on...

No! You and a collection of other liberals on this forum respond to every issue involving this President by finding a way to blame Bush or Republicans. You never just outright condemn the behavior. This President promised to be different. He promised to be the most transparent administration ever. What did we get? The same old crap and pass the blame.

This administration has been a train wreck since the beginning. It isn't going to get any better. If President Obama didn't know that we were spying on the German Chancellor then he needs to fire someone pretty high up in his administration for failing to keep him informed. If he did know about it, then he needs to own up to it and end the practice. There is an awful lot of information not making it to the President. Who is in charge, after all? We have a complete failure of leadership.

"No RNorm it is not okay. You can't excuse the sins if this administration by pointing out the sins of the previous. That is your tact on EVERYTHING. I'd pass out torches and pitchforks then join you in marching on Washington to demand Bush resign but I fear we are too late. Will you join with me in condemning this President's running of our country? In spying on friendly world leaders?"

Who's excusing it?

I'm just pointing out its been going on for a VERY long time, and as your last post points out, its not like we didn't know. So please, spare me all of this pseudo-outrage as its just partisan bluster crap.

And again, I said from the BEGINNING that such spying is wrong REGARDLESS of who's doing it or who's the president in the thread I started YEARS ago on the very subject...

"The United States may have been spying on German Chancellor Angela Merkel since as far back as 2002, according to a report Saturday by German news magazine Der Speigel.

Citing a secret document leaked by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden, the news magazine claims the U.S. surveillance arm’s Special Collection Service had Merkel on a list before she became chancellor in 2005, Reuters reports."

Turns out its been going on since 2002...But I guess that's ok...

Until some country actually decides to withdraw their ambassador to the USA over this issue, it won't matter. The USA has spied on every country in the world. That's not a surprise. What is a surprise is that they got caught.

Obama is destroying our credibility with our most valued allies.

Obama Aware Of Surveillance On Angela Merkel Since 2010

This is after Merkel was assured by the Obama people and Obama himself that he didn't know and had he known, he would have stopped it.
Turns out Obama knew, and approved it.

Why is a sitting Congresswoman also the DNC head?

In other words, she never shows up for work to one of those -- guess which one that is???

Governments have been spying on each other since government was invented. There is no 4th amendment between governments.

However, citizens (and legal residents) of the USA do have protection against spying by their own government.

Amendment IV of the United States Constitution:

"The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized."

Spying on you and me is a grave breach.

"This would be a grave breach of trust."

Sort of like the breach of trust between the government and the people? Or the trampling of the 4th Ammendment?

Trust me!
