Channel 2 KTVU News in Oakland, California actually aired this false news, bypassing the common sense of a reporter, writer, editor, news director, news reader, etc.
Asiana Pilots names from KTVU News

of course it doesn't stop there, the NTSB also confirmed for them this racist humor, but later retract it here:
NTSB Press Release

While it is slightly amusing and incredible that this happened, it is quickly washed away by realizing immediately the incompetence and lack of excellence we see in today's media as well as governmental agencies.

I read the NTSB press release. As I asserted earlier, "Earlier today, in response to an inquiry from a media outlet, >>>a summer intern<<< acted outside the scope of his authority when he erroneously confirmed the names of the flight crew on the aircraft." The press release goes on to say that "Appropriate actions will be taken to ensure that such a serious error is not repeated."

My point is that the incompetent person was a summer intern and the FCC would take appropriate action. My guess would be that the summer intern no longer works there. Should KTVU be penalized by the FCC for negligence? No.

Marty: <<<"I see no evidence of government agency incompetence in your article.">>>

--The news reader states that the NTSB had confirmed the erroneous information, and furthermore, a NTSB Press Release I linked to in the OP further acknowledges this, and seeks to retract this with explanation. Can't be any clearer than that!

I'm not sure what your counterpoint would be, that KTVU should not be handled by the FCC for negligence? Or is it that if you have an incompetent person fielding calls for a government agency, it is OK?

The media (to the extent that KTVU is representative of the media) is entirely competent in what it seeks to do, which is generate revenue at the expense of good journalism. The media in this case did more than display lack of journalism, it outright lied in saying that the NTSB had confirmed the names they reported.

I see no evidence of government agency incompetence in your article.

Marty, does that mean then that the media phones the FAA or NTSB and asks the first live person that answers the phone to verify data instead of an onsite investigator, media officer, or investigative department head from the FAA or NTSB? I'm sorry, this points to major incompetence by the media in my book, something that is egregious enough to at least shake up their FCC license a little bit.

From the OP: "Earlier today, in response to an inquiry from a media outlet, >>>a summer intern<<< acted outside the scope of his authority when he erroneously confirmed the names of the flight crew on the aircraft."

Emphasis mine.

Good news for the reporter, writer, editor, news director, news reader, etc. involved; the IRS will soon be hiring people to manage Obamacare.
