Senate democrats are ready, willing, and able to drop the nuclear bomb on senate republicans, effectively neutering any minority voice in the senate. Is this really what we want to see happen? That some state's elected voices will be silenced by the majority?

I fail to see how the GOP can justify consistently filibustering executive level appointees. The president is allowed to bring in his own staff and personell to head the different departments of the government. Its one of the perks of winning the election.

No one with any ounce of a conscience can justifiably say that preventing someone from heading a department just because you disagree with the departments very existence is justifiable is any way.

Frankly this type of minority tyrrany preventing the government from even operating is beyond contemptible. Judicial and legislative filibusters still will work the same. Executive level appointments which a president has to be able to do in order to make the government function as well as possible should have a straight up or down vote.

"Well, this is in line with the Democrat party trying to grip power at all costs"

Did you say the same when republicans were about to do the same thing? See my reply to Speedy below...

"Another example of leftist democrats trying to take away the free speech of those that do not agree with them. "

Another one who has a short memory; so here's a quick trip down memory lane:

""The Nuclear Option was brought to prominence in 2005 when Majority Leader Bill Frist (Republican of Tennessee) threatened its use to end Democratic-led filibusters of judicial nominees submitted by President George W. Bush. In response to this threat, Democrats threatened to shut down the Senate and prevent consideration of all routine and legislative Senate business. The ultimate confrontation was prevented by the Gang of 14, a group of seven Democratic and seven Republican Senators, all of whom agreed to oppose the nuclear option and oppose filibusters of judicial nominees, except in extraordinary circumstances."" (wiki)

But back then you probably were calling the "leftist democrats" obstructionists; right?

No single issue exposes blatant hypocrisy more than the filibuster. There should be a law that once you criticize the filibuster you are forbidden forever from defending it, and vice versa. Penalty - permanent expulsion from office, or from this forum.

Well, this is in line with the Democrat party trying to grip power at all costs. An example - here in the Land of Fruits and Nuts, we have a new law. The top two vote getters, regardless of party in a primary election get to be the two candidates that run. This is not how it's done elsewhere, where one candidate from each party gets to run. The CA general assembly consists of about 85% Democrat and 15% Republican representatives. It seems to me that this is nothing more than a way for Democrats to hold power and quash any dissenting voice.

Considering the atmosphere in Washington a majority vote is a good idea. A real filibuster should include the Senator making his argument for the nation to see and hear his pleas out loud. Sen Strom Thurmond had no problem with this when he fought against Civil Rights. I'm sure his bi racial daughter shook her head in disgust about her hypocritical father.

A better chart that illustrates who was president, who was the minority, and the results of the filing.

Don't worry; if they do this, you will all be thrilled next time the Senate and the Presidency are in your hands.

Of course the Dems want to limit filibusters. That way, they can railroad and steamroll legislation through without any opposition and without any compromise positions. However, I'm 100% positive the Dems will want a rule change when the pendulum swings the other way and bam! The Dems at that point will be the minority again.

"cutting off their nose in spite of their face. Aren't democrats smart enough to know this will come back to hauunt them? "

How quickly conservatives forget (they were threatening the exact same thing over the exact same issue):

"The Nuclear Option was brought to prominence in 2005 when Majority Leader Bill Frist (Republican of Tennessee) threatened its use to end Democratic-led filibusters of judicial nominees submitted by President George W. Bush. In response to this threat, Democrats threatened to shut down the Senate and prevent consideration of all routine and legislative Senate business. The ultimate confrontation was prevented by the Gang of 14, a group of seven Democratic and seven Republican Senators, all of whom agreed to oppose the nuclear option and oppose filibusters of judicial nominees, except in extraordinary circumstances." (wiki)

Again, its stupid for either side to go nuclear. As I said earlier, stop the secret holds and have up and down votes on ALL nominees.

If they do this they will regret it when the shoe is on the other foot.

As it surely will be.

The only change that needs to be done is no more secret holds and 1 man voiceless fillibusters. If you are so much against a nominee get off your rear and talk till the end of the session.

For a lot of reasons I would not want to see this change in how the Senate does its business. Both in the immediate future and the more distant future. Dingy Harry knows that what goes around comes around - but he is too old to really care much except the next few years.

For the past 3-4 presidential terms, each side has threatened to go nuclear. Its silly. Just give the nominees up or down votes and stop the secret holds and the problem will be solved.
