"a president whose decisions "from start to finish were guided by politics."
*****************
An administration riven with infighting. A commander-in-chief given to "dithering" on critical wartime decisions. A suspicious and devious White House staff erecting a "Berlin Wall" around a secluded and standoffish president, shielding him from those advisers -- particularly at the Department of State -- willing to convey unpleasant truths.

It all sounds rather like the sensational literature that proliferated in the mid-to-late 1970s to chronicle the collapsed presidency of Richard Nixon -- including the description of a White House "Berlin Wall," originally applied, with great fanfare, to those much-maligned (and eventually imprisoned) Nixon aides H.R. Haldeman and John Ehrlichman.

Instead, it is President Obama's turn to watch as former aides and journalists rush into print -- with a warp speed that eluded the insider memoirists of the 1970s -- their detailed and dishy accounts of the first Obama term.

A forthcoming book by former foreign policy aide Vali Nasr paints the above portrait, describing a president whose decisions "from start to finish were guided by politics."

Naturally, any politician considers politics and the possibility of political advantage to a course of action. But at some point you need to do what you were elected to do and govern the country for the good of ALL the people.

Mudtoe it is deliberate so the low information voter (the critical group that got him re-elected) will think that obama is actually fighting to fix problems instead of deliberately destroying the economy ie Rush Limbaugh' theorem

Using a baseball analogy (morphed with a military one) this column explains a lot:
Obama Tosses a Grenade Into His Own Dugout
"While he couldn't throw a baseball within ten feet of home plate -- even if it took a double bounce on the way in -- Obama has tossed perfect incendiary strikes inside his own clubhouse, sending his entire team to the disabled list, demoted to the minor leagues, or banned from the game for life."

"...Obama's aloofness and hubris on steroids led to his own self-destruction. He sealed his real legacy by giving up the winning run when he failed to cover home plate."

I'm betting his secretary didn't "accidently" erase any tapes. The curse of modern technology is that once it's bent sent, it exists forever.

TT: "Why won't Obama actually govern? Is he unwilling or incapable? Does it matter?"

Since he's too big to know I guess it follows that he's too big to govern.

It's like books. You don't have to ban them if you can just get people not to read them.

I really do believe that the majority of politicians get into it to help...but unfortunately they get changed along the way.

No offense taken Cliff or Panama.

Whether Republican, Democrat or Independent, the idea of a politician "in it" just for personal or political gain is sickening. This country has been [at least since 1965] all about including EVERYONE. Too many consider this a 60's-style "It's Us or Them" situation. NEWSFLASH! It'll NEVER work that way. Pushing public hysteria as a political tool is heinous and should be condemned by all.

Republicans "gave in" on several tax increases with the elimination of tax breaks and "loopholes" at the first fiscal cliff. Democrats are balking at similar cuts and had the sequester take effect, rather than actually target anything specific.

What I want to know is why didn't the various Department Secretaries already have plans in place for cuts? Surely, they shouldhave known that there was a possibility. Did Obama's administration tell them not to have plans for cuts? The email to make the cuts after the fact painful, so as to make the administration look less foolish is abominable, and ineffective.

The submission of a budget after four years with a TRILLION in new taxes is asinine. Certainly I don't expect the administration to go along with Ryan's scrapping of all of Obamacare, but upping taxes by a TRILLION dollars?!

sgm: "It really just sticks in your craw that he won a second term, eh?"

What sticks in our craw is that the country is suffering because of his socialist ideas that are costing us more and more each day...and the answer is to keep taxing and taxing and taxing!

teacher_tim, "lol, THAT'S one I've never been called before"

One hopes that you are not one to which it applies.

When one considers the level of mature judgment on the part of the teachers and/or administrators that suspend seven year olds for aiming a partial Pop Tart at a friend and saying "Bang", or expelling another similarly aged girl for terroristic threatening of a classmate because she said she was going to shoot a classmate with a pink bubble-blowing gun, one might more clearly understand the point.

And then when you further reflect on the general attitude common in our liberal educational system against our free market system and in favor of government control of our lives and the dependency of the people upon government for their needs you will understand what was meant.

I grew up as a child of the '40s and '50s which were much more traditional times in this country, and was shocked by the irresponsible attitudes and magical thinking of the hippies of the '60s - and I see that irrational and destructive thinking reflected in much of our educational community today that appears divorced from reality.

Not ALL teachers by any means, but enough to taint the system and to explain the disastrous results they have had on the education of the past couple of generations of kids.

Tim, that yellow streak comment was not for you.
Sorry if you took it that way.

It was for the person with the mental color handicap that he can not seem to control.

The solution is to put it on ignore and be done with it.

"is that one yellow stripe down your back or two?"

Depends on the traffic flow where you fell asleep in the middle of the road before the new paint truck came by, doesn't it?

Could also be dotted on one side or the other...

Ac-, "social welfare doesn't really get you anything" tell that to the poor. Tell that to the babies that every con wanted to save from an abortion. You want to save fetuses be prepared to pay for them without all the whining.

AC: "Social welfare programs don't really get you anything. So you help out some of the lower elements of society that aren't producing anything. Great. What does it get you?"

It does get you something: ever more people on the gravy train. If you provide an incentive for a particular behavior you will always end up with more of that behavior. Just check out the food stamp explosion in the past few years:

"Topic: What Republicans and Honest Democrats Have Long Suspected..."

--The real truth ought to be something like "you can't spend more than you take in." Democrats have completely lost sight of that one. Republicans haven't done much better, though perhaps slightly. Orders for military hardware and infrastructure at least show a tangible benefit. Social welfare programs don't really get you anything. So you help out some of the lower elements of society that aren't producing anything. Great. What does it get you? Not improved productivity, not more tax money. Increasing welfare is a drain on resources that could be better spent elsewhere.

Yes, it means former staffers were well-trained in making maximum profit while screwing the people they supposedly represented... I wonder how they got THAT training?

Well, if Obama's own staffers are now rushing to publish unflattering memoirs about him, that speaks volumes in and of itself.

Too bad someone didn't tell Old filibuster Mitch that during the last four years.

His one and only mission was to do whatever he had to do to make Obama a "One Term" president.
