"For the first time since Election Day, President Obama is on the defensive. That's because on March 1, automatic spending cuts ("sequestration") go into effect -- $1.2 trillion over 10 years, half from domestic (discretionary) programs, half from defense.

The idea had been proposed and promoted by the White House during the July 2011 debt-ceiling negotiations. The political calculation was that such draconian defense cuts would drive the GOP to offer concessions.

It backfired. The Republicans have offered no concessions. Obama's bluff is being called and he's the desperate party. He abhors the domestic cuts. And as commander in chief he must worry about indiscriminate Pentagon cuts that his own defense secretary calls catastrophic.

So Tuesday, Obama urgently called on Congress to head off the sequester with a short-term fix. But instead of offering an alternative $1.2 trillion in cuts, Obama demanded a "balanced approach," coupling any cuts with new tax increases.

What should the Republicans do? Nothing.

Republicans should explain -- message No. 1 -- that in the fiscal-cliff deal the president already got major tax hikes with no corresponding spending cuts. Now it is time for a nation that is $16 trillion in debt to cut spending. That's balance.

The Republicans finally have leverage. They should use it. Obama capitalized on the automaticity of the expiring Bush tax cuts to get what he wanted at the fiscal cliff -- higher tax rates. Republicans now have automaticity on their side.""

This sounds like a bass ackwards way of getting actual spending cuts, but since Obama refuses to make any himself, I'm for it!

Who, higher up, gave the order to the IRS to give the Tea Party a bad time? Even the FBI, OSHA and ATF were involved.

Topic: America, let's call President Obama's sequester bluff

--I kind of think we did, and those who are not Obama supporters can be thought of as the winners. I think Obama and the Democrats LOST this time. They tried to pin it on the Republicans, and it failed to stick - rightly so in my opinion.

And in order to "rub it in", Obama has closed WH tours and some other such things. Oh, I heard he CANCELLED Jewish History Month celebrations at the WH. I wonder if he also cancelled Black History Month celebrations in February? Oh, wait.. no he didn't. Wasn't poet Maya Anjelou there in Feb for the celebrations?

Did I hear correctly that Obama is taking a $1700 a month cut in salary?

Now let's see, $400,000 a year plus $50,000 tax free leaves him only $35,800 a month to live on. Gee, he might have to give up chewing gum.

How many $$$ did it cost to play golf with Tiger? Secret Service, armored car, staff, etc. Oh, that's right... the money came from closing the White House to tours. Excellent planning, Obama!

I75at7AM, "That's right! Let's cut tuition assistance for active-duty military people to further their educations!"

I talked to Paul Ryan and Allen West about that at CPAC. My daughter talked to Ted Cruz about it at CPAC as well. I think that will be corrected soon!

Besides hurting children and the poor, who else can this administration nick by cutting their little segment of budgetary largesse from the steaming pile?

I'm a winter Texan who goes across the border once a week for lunch and dancing. As of April 6th, Border Patrol Agents will no longer be allowed to work overtime and they may see a pay cut. Is Obama and his staff taking a pay cut? Ha!

Yes, Obama's gloom and doom tour was an utter failure and the idiot's approval ratings dropped like a cheap prom dress!!

His faith is totally on himself and big government while the vast majorities of Americans know it's "We the People" as the reason for America's greatness.

My property taxes, state income tax, and sales tax is keeping my community going. The feds contribute very dam little. Wht is Obama talking about? All I see is him giving it away to the free-loaders who vote for him. Dam right, CUT BACK ON THE WELFARE. Let them start working at McDonalds. In the 1930s when we really had a great depression, the Feds made you work for the WPA or CCC if you wanted to get any support. That kind of welfare was worthwhile.

Anyone seen any fire trucks up on blocks? What about widespread police layoffs? Pestilence in the streets? Bread lines? Riots? Has the electric grid failed? Are planes falling from the skies? How long before it is safe to come out of the bunkers and remove the tin foil hats?

Sequestration: A Teaching Moment

"The e-mail places the sequestration squarely upon the U.S. Congress. But nowhere in the entire e-mail is Dear Leader Barack Hussein Obama, or his role, even mentioned. The PTA said was "disappointed with the lack of a bipartisan solution," but forgot (on purpose?) to mention that House Republicans offered several plans to alter the cuts, but Democrats would not consider them, preferring instead to raise taxes. I guess bipartisanship means, to the PTA, doing thing the Democrats' way, while ignoring Republicans."

Yes, indeed, the Sequestration is a teachable moment, for those capable of learning.

The author of this column, while having a famous namesake, has been writing on American Thinker for some time, and his background can be found at the end of this article.

Maxine Waters said because of the sequester, about 170 million people might lose their jobs. Gee, there's only 150 million people working, so I guess everyone will be losing their jobs. And then there's another 20 million from somewhere that will lose their jobs, too. I guess we'll have to import them, to have enough to lose 170 million jobs. With people like this running congress, no wonder we're in sad shape.

Gman - I think you nailed the real problem. "he has NO management skill"..."he has zero skills at negotiation and governing...Americans re-elected someone who only knows how to promote one thing, himself."

Then you listen to the link JD put up and you see another real aspect of the overall problem. Because the Senate and Obama have not done their job for years now there is no budget. The managers on the ground have almost no flexability to make it work and be more efficient.

Again this ties directly to the political games played by Reid and Obama. They just really dont care what effects their political games are having. Reminds me of LBJ and his boys trying to micromanage Veitnam and getting people killed because they didnt know what they were doing.

Obama, our own doomsday naysayer and great divider, once against shows he has NO management skill and acts just like a 4th grader who doesn't get his way so is taking his ball and running home to cry to Mommy.

What an embarrassment...he has zero skills at negotiation and governing...Americans re-elected someone who only knows how to promote one thing, himself. (Listen to a speech he's reading from his teleprompter and count the me, myself, and I's...you'd be shocked.)

She once more proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that she has joined the rustry steel 'Tpost' club...
.
>>>In a Thursday press conference, California Democratic Rep. Maxine Waters warned of job losses totaling 170 million if the sequester goes through. Waters’ warning comes at a time when there are estimated to be between 135 and 143 million jobs in the United States.<<<

She is also one of those who refused to see there was a housing bubble problem and that it was the govt driving it. She said the govt agency that was buying up all the bad loans was dong a great job.....

A good summary piece of what is going on: Sequester Fraud Continues

"Now 0bama is using this sequester situation to once-again frighten the American people. He heads out to make campaign speeches telling people of the horrible consequences that will rain down on them if the horrible Republicans cause all of these disastrous spending cuts to take place because they’re protecting the rich from further tax increases.

Disastrous spending cuts? If these spending cuts went through it would be like taking $4.60 out of a weekly food budget of $200. That’s less than a pound of coffee. This is going to cause your economic world to come to an end? Really?"

So, Obama actually met with House GOP leaders. For seven minutes. "On Wednesday, for example, the president gave GOP lawmakers as much as seven minutes, a rare face-to-face encounter that the White House described as a “meeting.”"

Wow. Not much time there to call the bluff.

One of my favorite columnists Neal Boortz (retired from radio) knows quite a bit about airport operations and the FAA's role in that, as he has been a private pilot for decades. He illustrates how the Obama Administration is trying to play up the sequestration cuts into a chasm to be feared by all miniscule Americans. Nothing could be further from the truth. The Obama Administration has great leeway in directing the various federal agencies as to where to cut some spending. Obama opts for punishing the people and scaremongering.

Sequestration Scare
"0bama, through his control of the Executive Department, gets to direct a lot of spending. So when one of his agencies, the FAA, for instance, has to cut back on it’s spending plans, 0bama has a degree of control over where the cuts will be. 0bama, it seems, has decided that he will work to make the cuts as draconian as possible. Here’s an example: For years the FAA has wanted to get rid of NDB navigation beacons. The FAA would like to get rid of these antiquated systems....But it seems that when the FAA proposes decommissioning these NDB beacons congressmen in whose districts these things are located start raising holy local hell....But does Obama tell us that if the FAA funding is cut he’s going to get rid of these antiquated NDB beacons? No. He tells us that control towers will close and aviation safety will be compromised."

Nice, huh? Leadership at it's finest. An opportunity to cut out old systems, wasteful spending, and Obama panders to the dumb masses and threatens to endanger the flying public.

Disgusting.

Who elected this moron, anyway? Did any of you vote for this guy?
Care to admit it now?

They would LIKE you to believe all that gloom and doom, but reality is that the departments have lots of cash they can rearrange to cover expenses for a while.

HERE'S a RADICAL concept! How about if the Senate actually passes a budget that can be debated and amended to make things work without the constant Obama Crisis Shrill Voice Syndrome. The [President] Who Cried "Wolf!" is playing to diminishing audiences.

Judging by the liberal handwringing, when the sequester hits, airplanes will fall out of the sky, the borders will lie undefended, food will pass to consumers uninspected, all manner of plague and pestilence will descend upon the land.......all as the result of a 2-1/2% cut in the budget.

Just wait until we get real budget cuts of 10%, 20%, 30%. Then we shall see what is really important that government does.

“It will kick in,” Oklahoma Republican Sen. Tom Coburn told “Fox News Sunday.” "The reason there is no agreement is because there's no leadership from the president on actually recognizing what the problem is."

He was joined on Fox by Missouri Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill, who agreed the cuts would occur -- “unless the Republicans are willing to compromise and do a balanced approach.”

"The Republicans will be blamed for any potential pain. Most Americans will believe anything the media tells them."

Good thing there are the wise people who can't be fooled because they know better than that. They get their information, at least in part, from more objective sources like Fox News Channel or the WorldNet Daily. They're no mere sheeple, by golly.

SemiSteve said: "Austerity has shut down Greece's economy and much of Europe. If forced upon us it will have the same effect. Want unemployment to skyrocket? Then don't cry when you get what you ask for."

--No, lack of capital has shut down Greece's economy. They retire at like 55 - 60 years old, with a huge benefit. Germany bailed them out once, but the government basically did nothing. German bailed them out a second time, saying "that's all, folks", and this time they did the bare minimum - and still there was rioting in the streets. Greece needed to solve their own problem and NOT continue overspending, like we are not. Mark my words - "Greece" is coming to the US in 2 years if we don't cut spending. And it's not "The one that I want" (reference to the musical of a similar name as the country..)

gocatgo said: "Obama also was against going to war in Iraq but you won't hear many cons mention that point either. "Sniff, sniff" but cons were still for sequester before they were against it. Yes, that "rotten stench of hypocrisy" is drifting all around."

--And I have no problem mentioning that Obama was against the war. So what? But here's a list of the senators that voted against the resolution to go to war in 2002 (from ):
* Daniel Akaka (D-Hawaii)
* Jeff Bingaman (D-New Mexico)
* Barbara Boxer (D-California)
* Robert Byrd (D-West Virginia)
* Lincoln Chaffee (R-Rhode Island)
* Kent Conrad (D-North Dakota)
* Jon Corzine (D-New Jersey)
* Mark Dayton (D-Minnesota)
* Dick Durbin (D-Illinois)
* Russ Feingold (D-Wisconsin)
* Bob Graham (D-Florida)
* Daniel Inouye (D-Hawaii)
* Jim Jeffords (I-Vermont)
* Ted Kennedy (D-Massachusetts)
* Patrick Leahy (D-Vermont)
* Carl Levin (D-Michigan)
* Barbara Mikulski (D-Maryland)
* Patty Murray (D-Washington)
* Jack Reed (D-Rhode Island)
* Paul Sarbanes (D-Maryland)
* Debbie Stabenow (D-Michigan)
* The late Paul Wellstone (D-Minnesota)
* Ron Wyden (D-Oregon)

Note that Obama's name isn't there. Why? Because he wasn't a Senator until after the 2004 elections. Ok so he had an objection as a private citizen? So what has that to do with the price of tea in China? Michael Moron also favors every cause de jour that liberals are bandying about that minute. Again, so what?

But let's get back to sequester for a minute. The Republicans have made a number of proposals for cuts. Our obstructionist Democrats have basically said: "No, NO WAY!" to every proposal, yet fail to propose their own cuts. And the President doesn't want to cut spending, nor does he want to solve the problem. He would prefer to stir up trouble. Since our government, and particularly the hard left and the Obama Administration, cannot seem to "get it together", i think allowing the "sequester" cuts to take effect is the absolute only way that we're going to see any spending cuts and freezes at all. So I'm starting to be all for sequester. And please understand, my job and job search will likely be affected by sequester. That said, while it may be painful for me, and may be painful for the country, I'm starting to STRONGLY believe that it is the best thing for us right now.

gocatgo, "101, "those were 2 great decades" for arms manufacturers for sure. But then ol Ron opted for free trade that sent most of America's manufacturing base overseas. Free trade was not fair trade since Ron did not believe in subsidizing American manufactures or adding tariffs for a level playing field."

And yet many foreign auto companies since then have been manufacturing cars here in the US.

Do you want all those foreign manufacturers to close their shops and build their products in their home countries?

I'm sure that many of those "first responders" are from local agencies that are funded locally. It is a huge stretch to assume that a small cutback in the huge federal budget is going to force all of them off their jobs.

You would have to willing suspend all disbelief to believe that.

If Obama decides to cut funding for first responders, he can be asked why he didn't cut funding Planned Parenthood, Public Broadcasting, foreign aid, and many other programs first.

He can certainly make those proposals now, before the sequester takes effect.
