The current laws of the state of New York say that his information is available by request. The state law of New York says the clerk must provide it. The first amendment states that no laws can be passed abridging the freedom of the press.
As a gun owner, I'd never want my name published. As a newspaper man, I never want the press silenced. As a law abiding citizen, I want our laws complied with. If we don't like a law, we need to work to change it not refuse to comply with them.

Bell30012, >>Unfortunately, this clerk is violating the law. The way the current law of New York is written, he is in clear violation. There is no shot in court of it holding up. In the end it will cost this county and maybe this individual a lot of money. The newspaper will get the information in the end.<< *** It may not be as cut and dry as you think. Aren't gun owners, and everyone else for that matter, entitled to their own privacy? To be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects as stated in the Fourth Amendment? Isn't forcing a local government to provide an organization with the names, addresses, maps on how to get to their homes and even pictures of their property INFRINGING UPON THEIR RIGHT TO KEEP AND BEAR ARMS? Isn't the rights of neighboring gun owners also being violated as they now become easy marks for criminals?

Any newspaper or group that posts names of gun owners that results in theft or harm to homeowners should be jailed, fined, and sued for damages.
