Is Obama to blame for high gas prices?

Please answer with one of the following:

No - He's not at all or very nearly so to blame.
Somewhat - He is partially to blame but other factors are mostly responsible.
Mostly - He is mostly to blame but other factors are somewhat responsible.
Completely - He is entirely or very nearly so to blame.

-Or give a different answer where you explain your position if it doesn't fit the above.

"But the Democratic Party is not and never has been 'socialist'."

Aren't the free gov handout programs, which are supported by the democrats, a form of socialism? I believe they are, and therefore, those who vote for the dems are voting for socialism...

"So because people voted against socialism they are obstructionists?"

Weaslespit "So because people voted for Democrats they are for socialism?"

Exactly Weaslespit.

I've traveled behind the iron curtain when it still existed, and anybody who thinks the Democratic Party espouses socialism is either sadly misinformed or so partisan extremist that their opinions on the subject should be ignored.

You may not like the Democratic Party, and that's ok. Not everybody has the same opinion and that's part of what makes this country great, that everybody CAN express their opinion.

But the Democratic Party is not and never has been 'socialist'.

I agree with most of what you say AC-302.

But not with the part about stopping oil exploration during the during Deepwater Horizon.

DH was such a huge disaster that it stretched the limits of what could be done to both stop the problem and clean it up. If any other rig had gone bad during that time, there's just no way there was enough people and equipment to deal with two such incidents at the same time. If a second rig had gone bad it would have had to be just ignored while crews fought to cap the DH rig.

And after DH, it's logical for a temporary stop to similar activity while the cause of the problem was investigated and steps were taken to reduce the chance of it happening again. It's not all that different from when an airline finds a problem in one aircraft, and all similar planes of ALL airlines are grounded until the problem is solved.

That being said, once the problem is found and methods to prevent it are developed, then exploration should be allowed to resume.

I would say Obama is only somewhat to blame. However he does carry with him a shade of the blame. To wit - he's cut off federal lands from exporation and production. Bush never did that. In addition, during and after Deepwater Horizon, Obama cut off all exploratory activity in the Gulf. That was just plain wrong to do. One well goes bad, OK. But does that mean that every other one on Earth is a safety hazard?

And for those that would claim that production is up domestically, they are right. But it's no thanks due to Obama. That increase in production is on PRIVATELY OWNED lands, not at all on Federally owned ones.

grampi47 "They're all crooked....whether they have a D or an R after their name really doesn't matter..."

Exactly right grampi47.

It doesn't matter whether they have a D or an R, it's that they're politicians, a creature that is inherently not to be trusted or believed regardless of what side they sit on.

That seems to be something that a few people here don't understand though. They think that their favorite flavor of politician can do no wrong while the other side can do no right, and that's just not the case.

The republicans are obstructionists? Why, just because they won't agree with every stupid idea the dems come up with? They're all crooked....whether they have a D or an R after their name really doesn't matter...

Who's ever said that everything is "all Bush's fault" jdhelm? Certainly not I.

It seems to be something purely out of your fertile imagination. Otherwise known as a strawman.

But it seems that YOU think that everything is Obama's fault. Absolutely everything, including things that happened even before he was elected.

And I've never yet seen you accept that Bush, or for that matter ANY Republican president was ever to blame for anything. Just the Democrat ones.

Just a little over-zealously partisan perhaps?

What's the chance you ever be honest like Weaslespit when he said "I think he has done some things right and some things wrong - just like any other past POTUS."?

Yes, it's all George Bush's fault! President Obama is nothing more than a puppet in the never-ending failed Bush administration. If only George Bush weren't still in charge, all of President Obama's problems would be solved-I found the above and below on a msm page:

George Bush, who doesn't have a vote in Congress and who no longer occupies The White House, is to blame for it all.

He broke Obama's promise to put all bills on the White House web site for five days before signing them.

He broke Obama's promise to have the congressional health care negotiations broadcast live on C-SPAN.

He broke Obama's promise to end earmarks.

He broke Obama's promise to keep unemployment from rising above 8 percent.

He broke Obama's promise to close the detention center at Guantanamo in the first year.

He broke Obama's promise, to make peace with direct, no precondition talks with America 's most hate-filled enemies during his first year in office, ushering in a new era of global cooperation.

He broke Obama's promise to end the hiring of former lobbyists into high White House jobs.

He broke Obama's promise to end no-compete contracts with the government.

He broke Obama's promise to disclose the names of all attendees at closed White House meetings.

He broke Obama's promise for a new era of bipartisan cooperation in all matters.

He broke Obama's promise to have chosen a home church to attend Sunday services with his family by Easter.

Yes, it's all George Bush's fault! President Obama is nothing more than a puppet in the never-ending failed Bush administration. If only George Bush weren't still in charge, all of President Obama's problems would be solved. His promises would have been kept, the economy would be back on track, Iran would have stopped its work on developing a nuclear bomb and would be negotiating a peace treaty with Israel, North Korea would have ended its tyrannical regime and integrity would have been restored to the federal government.

Oh, and did I mention what it would be like if the Democrats, under the leadership of Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid, didn't have the heavy yoke of George Bush around their necks? There would be no earmarks, no closed-door drafting of bills, no increase in deficit spending, no special-interest influence (unions), no vote buying ( Nebraska, Louisiana ).

If only George Bush weren't still in charge, we'd have real change by now-

oh, and don't shoot the messenger (lib saying)

I wish I could take credit for that posting but it belongs to grampi - I only agreed with him ;)

To be completely transparent, I like him better than what the other side has had to offer the past two elections. I think he has done some things right and some things wrong - just like any other past POTUS.

flyboyUT, the feds, as Weaslespit has said it so well, includes ALL the presidents for at least the last half century. It isn't just Obama, as you and so many of your fellow conservatives love to imply, or even just all the liberal presidents, but ALL of them.

However, it seems that there's a certain segment of the population who want to make Obama out to be some sort of anti-American and who blame absolutely everything on him, rightly or wrongly, and who just will not listen or pay attention to any actual facts.

Are you one of those?

Or are you realistic, like Weaslespit, who is honest enough to admit that while he doesn't like Obama, acknowledges that it's not just his fault but that it's the fault of both the liberal AND the democratic presidents?

Oh yeah, and if 50 years ago we'd increased the supply of domestic oil and not started to get oil from overseas, how much more vulnerable might we be by now if we'd used up all our accessible oil and therefore HAD to rely on overseas oil even in the case of another world war or China buying it all up?

I suggest that we're better off keeping our supply of domestic oil available in case of emergency instead of using it all up.

Babe - the feds (Obama) could take postitive steps to increase the supply of domestic fuel and they could also take postive steps to reduce the cost to have it in gas stations tanks.

The old argument of it doesnt matter today because it will take years to bring oil to market is just so much balderdash. Clinton kept saying that about Alaska oil. Well the time has long gone by when he said it would hit market and its still being held up by the govt and the price of fuel has gone way high.

You can make all the excuses yo wish but that will not change the facts.

Turn the industry loose and reduce the regulations that dont solve any problems and just cost time and money and watch what will happen.

Look at the availability and price of Natural Gas after new supplies that the govt couldnt stop yet came online.

Yes 101Speedster, Obama probably could do something to lower gas prices.

He could remove federal taxes, but the difference would have to come from somewhere and Republicans are dead-set again income tax increases.

He could release some federal lands for drilling, but that probably wouldn't come on-line soon enough to make any difference until after the next election.

He could approve Keystone, but that won't make any difference soon either, and a LOT of people would be very upset about that.

He could probably get OPEC countries to ship more oil to America, but that would be supporting terrorist states and everybody, conservatives and liberals would be upset about that.

He can't force the oil companies to reduce their prices. Conservatives would be furious about such interference.

He can't make the states reduce state taxes, that's also interference that wouldn't be allowed.

What else can he really do? With all the complaining that conservatives like to do, do they really have any reasonable alternatives?

BlackGumTree, even you yourself started your post by saying “This is true.” Then at the end you end with “..your deception and lies.”

So which is it? You can't both tell the truth and lie at the same time.

If you extend the price chart back to 8 years, you can see that the price quoted during the Bush years was NOT “a spike” and that in fact from the period starting around April 2006 until Obama too office, the price under Bush was higher than the price under Obama for all of 2009 and 2010.

Of course there has been a gradual climb under Obama. There has been a gradual in gas prices worldwide. Do you think the US is somehow invulnerable to inflation, speculators, OPEC and oil company greed.

In fact, under Obama, the price hasn't shown the wild fluctuations that it did under Bush. If you did a regression/trend analysis of the price under Bush to get a smooth trend line, you'd find that the average price under Bush climbed at the same rate as it has under Obama. And the worlwide price has done the same.

Stable prices of any commodity are usually better for the public than the spikes and drops seen under Bush, which usually give the most benefit to the speculators, traders and oil companies. So if anybody was manipulating things, it was Bush.

Extend the gas price chart back to it's maximum of 11 years (2002) and then do another trend analysis and you'll find that if it had continued on the same trend as it had been under Bush, it would actually be HIGHER now than under the Obama.

Of course, that's something that some Obama-haters can't let themselves hear. To some on the far right, anything that's not anti-Obama is a deception and a lie, regardless of the actual facts.

No, the gas prices are not coming down to what they were before. With very few exceptions, can you think of anything where the price has been going down, or where it's ever likely to return to what it was a decade ago?

So there's no “myth” as you've accused BlackGumTree. Just the distortion of an Obama-hater.

BabeTruth - "It shows that the national average reached about $4.11 in July, 4 months BEFORE Obama was elected and immediately AFTER Obama was elected the price dropped to $1.71 a gallon."

This is true. But if you look back further you will see that this is a spike and Bush go it down to $1.71 BEFORE Obama took office and could do anything about fuel prices.

AFTER Obama took office there has been a climb upward, NOT a spike, and it does NOT appear to be coming back down during 4 years of Obama occupying the White House.

Yeah! Look between the Dots. Obama is to BLAME for the rise in fuel prices on his watch.

Go ahead and correct this "myth" with your deceptions and lies, BabeTruth!

wbacon "gas price when obamaa became president $1.75/gal GAS PRICE TODAY..... WELL YOU CAN DRAW THE LINES BETWEEN THE DOTS.....iS OBAMA TO BLAME??? This is another trick question isn't it????"

Use the 'price chart' function on the left of the Gas Buddy home page, and set it to show the gas prices in 2008 when Bush was still in power and before Obama was elected.

It shows that the national average reached about $4.11 in July, 4 months BEFORE Obama was elected and immediately AFTER Obama was elected the price dropped to $1.71 a gallon.

If conservatives have to lie to make their point then obviously they don't have anything and are just, well, liars.

I've corrected this myth several times and yet conservatives keep telling it, even though it's so easy to prove as a lie. No wonder they lost the election.

The following are 24 stats that show just how much Obama has royally messed up our economy….

#1 Under Bill Clinton, the average unemployment rate was 5.2 percent. Under George W. Bush, the average unemployment rate was 5.3 percent. Under Barack Obama, things have been much worse. The month after he took office the unemployment rate rose above 8 percent and it has stayed there ever since.

#2 Under Barack Obama, the velocity of money (a very important indicator of economic health) has plunged to a post-World War II low.

#3 Real median household income has decreased by more than 4000 dollars since Barack Obama entered the White House.

#4 The United States has plenty of oil and we should not have to import it from the Middle East. Unfortunately, Barack Obama has an absolutely nightmarish energy policy. Under Bill Clinton, the number of drilling permits approved rose by 58 percent. Under George W. Bush, the number of drilling permits approved rose by 116 percent. Under Barack Obama, the number of drilling permits approved decreased by 36 percent.

#5 When Barack Obama took office, the average price of a gallon of gasoline was $1.85. Today, the average price of a gallon of gasoline is $3.71.

#6 Under Barack Obama, the United States has lost more than 300,000 education jobs.

#7 Since Barack Obama became president, the number of long-term unemployed Americans has risen from 2.7 million to 5.2 million.

#8 For the first time in the post-World War II era, the employment-population ratio has not bounced back after a recession. The percentage of working age Americans with a job has been below 59 percent for 35 months in a row.

#9 While Barack Obama has been president, U.S. home values have fallen by another 12 percent.

#10 More than three times as many new homes were sold in the United States in 2005 as will be sold in 2012.

#11 Electricity bills in the United States have risen faster than the overall rate of inflation for five years in a row. Thanks Obama.

#12 When Barack Obama first entered the White House, an ounce of gold was going for about $850. Today, the price of gold is over $1630 an ounce.

#13 Since 2008, our economy has lost 1.3 million jobs while at the same time 3.6 million more Americans have been added to Social Security’s disability insurance program.

#14 The number of Americans on food stamps has grown from 31.9 million when Barack Obama took office to 46.4 million today. How much more “hope and change” are we going to be able to endure?

#15 As I wrote about the other day, it is being projected that Obamacare will add 16 million more Americans to the Medicaid rolls.

#16 If you can believe it (and this really is hard to believe), more than half of all Americans are now at least partially financially dependent on the government.

#17 The total amount of money that the federal government gives directly to the American people has grown by 32 percent since Barack Obama became president.

#18 Under Barack Obama, federal spending as a percentage of GDP (25 percent) is the highest that it has been since World War II.

#19 The Obama administration has been spending money on some of the most insane things imaginable. For example, in 2011 the Obama administration spent $592,527 on a study that sought to figure out once and for all why chimpanzees throw poop.

#20 The U.S. government has run a budget deficit of well over a trillion dollars every single year under Barack Obama.

#21 Under Barack Obama, U.S. debt was downgraded from AAA status for the first time ever.

#22 Since Barack Obama took office, the U.S. national debt has increased by 50 percent.

#23 Since Barack Obama became president, the U.S. national debt has increased by an average of more than $64,000 per taxpayer.

#24 During the Obama administration, the U.S. national debt has grown more than it did from the time that George Washington became president to the beginning of Bill Clinton’s second term as president.

Yes, Obama is the CEO of all of the gas refinery companies in the world. His capitalistic views are making it possible for the oil companies he manages to make record profits and he will take home a hefty bonus for a job well done. We need to pass legislation to make the oil companies 501c.
