Do fuel additives really work? In a GasBuddy survey, nearly 8,500 respondents doubted how well fuel additives worked in their experience, while 10,000 said they don't use such additives.
The results indicate a mixed bag, with 56%, or 4,717 responses, responding that fuel additives made no difference in their experience. 18% or 1,510 respondents said they experienced varied results, while 2% or 189 said they thought the additives made their car run worse than it was before they used the fuel additives.
That leaves just under a quarter of respondents users happy using fuel additives, or 24%- some 2,076 motorists- saying they felt that additives made their car run better....

Let's see.... I was once told by an industrial chemist that I could offset the bad effects of ethanol in the gas by using up to 5% diesel fuel in my gas powered truck. Tried it and it ran no worse than I could tell. SO.... if a big company tells you that a small can of their stuff will work, how can you tell???

I have used additives to clean up old gas problems in outboards and small engines. But why would you need to put an additive into a vehicle that is running OK?

Over the counter additives can help if you've been using dirty fuel. Added detergents can help clean injectors. Otherwise, they are generally a waste of money.

Been trying a fuel additive from Lucas Oil. Haven't seen a noticeable improvement yet. Is there an "adjustment" period before noticing any real changes? How many tanksful?

I believe some additives do provide a real benefit. I've been using PRI-G for years it does make the engine work better. I've also experimented with Ethanol Defense. I've been using a combination of acetone/xylene for about 10 years.

I use Marvel Mystery Oil. It helps keep the fuel system clean and you can also use it to clean out the oil sludge.
