GasBuddy, the online community that gives people control over how much they spend at the pump, released today an updated version of its popular mobile app for iPhone and Android. The update allows drivers to find and report gas prices based on cash and credit in markets that commonly price gas differently for each payment method.

“With credit card companies charging 2 to 3 percent of the price per gallon, some gas stations in places like California, New York and Florida are choosing to pass the savings onto customers that pay by cash,” said Jason Toews, co-founder of GasBuddy. “Total savings often range from 5 to 15 cents per gallon when drivers use cash instead of credit.”

Default sort order is still there, just not defaultly displayed. Click through the sort twice. Guess it's a bug.

And just to be clear, I don't want to get rid of the 2 new choices. I can see where they'll be useful. I just want the original order as a third choice.

The latest iteration allows you to choose two sort orders for your favorites: price or distance.

What about the order that I set them up in in the first place? There's a reason for that order.

rjhenn - OK. Are you posting from your favorites list in the mobile app, or through "Find Gas Near me"?

(I had not been using Favorites in the app)

me -- I entered prices for the station in question this morning using the favorites in the app; checking just now, it DID NOT enter the "e0" comment that is stored in the favorites list in the comment field. My conclusion is that the mobile app does NOT access or use any comment you have stored for a given station.

I haven't seen any stations around here offer a discount for cash, so I haven't seen that feature yet.

But the contrast issue does bother me, as I said, particularly when I'm outside.

I really need the line that reads "Wrong Price | Price is Right," when it changes to "Ready to submit," for those words to appear MUCH different. As it is now, it is not INSTANTLY registering that it has switched state. The new words could be MUCH larger (there is plenty of room), and with more contrast.

But not many people seem to join in on this request; I suppose because it is eyesight issues with me. But I ask this--if changing it would make it so much better for SOME people, and not hurt others in any way, why should it not be done?

Very common in NY State to see 2 prices based on cash vs credit card payment. Sadly, too many members post the higher price making it difficult to discern sometimes which price is truly the lowest. Gasbuddy.com has a policy asking members to post the lower of 2 prices intending a comment in the comment box to specify the difference but no effective method of ensuring that members will comply with the policy and even less influence on popularizing/educating members.

Upon proposing that Gasbuddy.com confront the problem head-on with a 2 or 3 line of additional program-code where the updating member is asked whether the price is cash/credit/same price, Gasbuddy.com has answered that it finds asking such a question to be "too difficult to implement". It makes a huge difference to the person seeking to pay the lowest price who pulls up to a declared lowest price, only to later discover that a nearby station offers it for 10 cents per gallon less but that the member who updated, had listed the credit card price when the cash price was in fact lower than the comparable prices found in the Gasbuddy price search.

Also, the index of prices is no longer accurate when higher credit card pricing is factored alongside cash prices. This can even lead speculators to assign credibility to perceived price spikes when no change in pricing exists.

Stations in my area don't offer discounts for cash. I see those mostly when I travel out of state. Some offer discounts for using their brand loyalty card. Stations vary on their discount. Most SA stations give a 3 cent discount, but a few (off the beaten path) offer 10 cents off. I like to add that to their double-coupon Tuesdays - and they accept competitor coupons (as do Holiday and Kwik-Trip).

While I applaud the "cash & credit" pricing information in the mobile app, I agree with numerous other posts that it's less intuitive for data entry (avoid phrases like "Wrong Price | Price is Right").

Additionally, it's a major step backward to use low-contrast foreground/background for text. On a white background, PLEASE use black, not washed-out greys.

Avoid forcing the user (on a already-cramped screen) to scroll more than necessary. It would be a big improvement to place the cash & credit prices next to each other (one on the left, one on the right) on the same line. Just because the app started life with prices one-above-the-other is no reason to stick with that design. It would make it quicker and easier BOTH for viewing and for reporting.

Or am I misunderstanding what you are saying?
I know I can get the comment to show when I enter prices from the web site; that is not the problem. The issue is getting the comment in when using the app--which no longer has a place to enter it.

This is one of the most stupid things Gas buddy has done in its fourteen years.
If you are going to change to separate reporting of cash and credit prices it is insane to do that only in one entry mechanism of the mobile apps.
It has to also be implemented in the original Web version and the two Web mobile versions.
Doing it only for the mobile apps just creates an inaccurate useless mess!!!!!

Those should be issues with the Master Station List, not the app. Go to the full site and click on "Master Station List" under "Gas Prices". Note: the missing station may have been marked as being permanently closed. Don't add a new entry, but change the status of the old one.

Yeah, that is weird. You can reorder them using the "[Edit my favorite stations]" link at the top of the list of favorite stations on the full site, but that's kinda clunky. They are still ordered by the Sort Order number, which defaults to '1', but there doesn't seem to be any order for favorites with the same Sort Order number. That's in the app. On the full site, favorites with the same Sort Order number are ordered alphabetically.

I think it is "all of the above"-- size, color/contrast, font-type....all of it combined. But the low contrast (text color vs. background) is a big factor.

Yes it did. It was below the last price field, usually the diesel. On my phone, you had to push the screen up to see it (scroll down).

The new GPS feature actually encourages drivers to enter prices WHILE DRIVING! If you wait to enter prices after you stop farther down the road, it questions the accuracy of your prices because the station "is so far away from you"! I live on Lake Texoma and I can see Oklahoma from my house so when I look for local gas prices, the GPS lists a lot of Okla. prices that are "8 miles away"...but only if I am IN A BOAT! By car, it would take me 1-2 hours to drive to those stations. Another point, the old version listed my favorites in alphabetical order. The new one doesn't list them alphabetically or by distance. I want my old version back!!!

Mostly positive changes BUT...

-need the COMMENT field back !!

BIGGEST POINT: They have fallen victim to the "make it pretty" crowd. Fonts are pastel or gray or faint or small or multiple of the above.

Related... ^^ ...for example, The READY TO SUBMIT text should be very large; as is, it isn't readily observable in bright ambient--and there is plenty of room there to do that!

Last poster's name doesn't appear on the screens one mostly uses.

Lastly, something was just more intuitive about touching the price to use it again rather than touching "Price is Right." My mind is saying, "I want 3.69. Ah, there's 3.69; touch it." and Wrong Price | Price is right are same small font (unreadable) so it takes real concentration ( = distraction) to see which side to press--the left phrase or the right one.

@deant99, if there's only one price/type, go to the bottom left of this page and click on "Master Station List". Find/select the station and then click Edit Station. Further down the page, uncheck the "Different Cash/Credit Pricing" item and then the Save button. Have fun!

You still have a comment field on the new interface? It disappeared entirely (AFAIK) on the version for my device (Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 running Android 4.0), as well as from most others' from whom I've seen comments about this issue. Before, I had to leave my favorites list access it through "Find Gas Near Me" (and that was bad enough) but now I don't see how to get to it at all with this update, or even see comments I left on the Web site with my home computer. What kind of device and OS are you running?

The update looks OK but someone keyed the wrong info about a station and the prices are doubled (cash and credit) and can't get back to the single pricing format.

They just pushed an updated app a few minutes ago. The list of stations page looks the same as before.... huge... only like 4+ station names. I swear it used to list a dozen names/stations on the old version(?)

yeah. Not as easy to use. There're too much wasted space and more scrolling needed for nothing. On a newer big-screen phone, this user interface looks pretty bad like some toy app! (You know... the toys with big buttons, etc. Problem is we have to scroll so much, not the big buttons.)

The only good news is now we can collect the max 750 points with just one station (the station with 3+1 x 2 prices due to cash/credit differences).

I also don't think the new Enter Price screen is as easy to use as the old one.

Particularly if you're outside, it's not as easy to see that you've confirmed the previous price. The color change and the "Ready to Submit" message tend to get washed out.

The old way, where the price copied into another field, didn't have that problem. The update field was either empty or had the new price in it.

My main complaint is that the larger layout means less is on the screen at one time. Especially on the price screen, the keyboard overlays the diesel price.

I would expect that even fewer people are going to report diesel.

Mobile and online web are different , can't post cash on web , also not everyone has updated mobile , so prices are really messed up , or won't post at all , kinda defeats the purpose of posting , I hope they fix this soon

Works great on my iPhone 5. Home screen comes out a bit garbled but workable on my fourth-generation iPad. I haven't tried to figure out why.
