Elon Musk said the electric-car maker has expanded its U.S. network of rapid chargers to let owners of battery-powered Model S sedans drive their cars from coast to coast for the first time.

Musk, Tesla's chief executive officer and co-founder, said last year the company would set up “Superchargers” in most major U.S. and Canadian cities to permit long-distance trips solely on electricity provided at no charge. That claim has become a reality.

“Tesla Supercharger network now energized from New York to LA, both coast + Texas!” Musk said in a Twitter post Sunday. “Approx 80% of US population covered.” There are now 70 recharging stations providing free Tesla battery charging coast to coast.

Readily available rapid recharge is what is holding back EV adoption. Limited range scares people.

sounds interesting and even appealing, but I-70 is the main coast to coast interstate, not the interstates in the north... would be interested to see how quickly they can cover the rest of the US

I like the idea of being able to recharge at no charge, but I can't afford the initial cost of the vehicle. Still, what if I want to go outside the corridor marked on the map? Looks like I'd be on my own.
