While millions of Americans are celebrating the New Year, one state will be raising state taxes on motor gasoline. Pennsylvania, a state in desperate need of a boost in funding for highways, bridges, and roads, passed a bipartisan bill that will raise the state gasoline tax to nearly 41-cents per gallon from approx. 31-cents per gallon in 2013. The 9.5-cent jump in gasoline is less than the 13ct/gal jump in diesel taxes.

According to sources, many fuel stations are expected to pass along the increase in gas taxes the moment it hits, which would be similar to what motorists in Virginia saw this past July.

Counter to Virginia, which actually lowered its gasoline tax while boosting sales tax, the move in Pennsylvania is likely...

This was done to Pennsylvanians by a Republican governor, Tom Corbett, who still claims it isn't a tax increase. He thinks any electorate that voted Obama in twice are idiots.....unfortunately that is absolutely true, only idiots would elect Obama twice, but we are smart enough to know he is the one taking the extra $2 out of our wallets every time we fill up.

reb4 asks:

"How does one prepare for higher taxes?"

Well, I guess that there are many possible answers to that question, but probably the best ones all suggest you choose between Vaseline or KY, as suits your individual compression ratio.

shasta: just b/c it's happening on the East Coast doesn't mean it won't come to a pump near you sooner than later, too.

How long will it take to divert money to other projects? No time at all. It's in the bill that raised the tax. Money is diverted to mass transit, hiking trails and cycling plus education about cycling, hiking, etc.

pez: don't hold your breath. FL will be on the list in the near future. Some areas already are planning tax hikes for gasoline sales.

I don't understand.

Why do their roads need fixing?

Wasn't one of Obozo's excuses to spend trillions of dollars on infrastructure repair? You know... all those "shovel-ready" projects he talked about!

The whole nation should have roads that glisten and sparkle in the sunlight, given the vast sum of money that Obozo has blown recklessly.

And the politicians and contractors can celebrate while us drivers pay, pay, pay. Wonder how long it will take the politicans to divert these new taxes to something other than highway construction?

A lot of stations near Pittsburgh went up 10 cents already and will go up 10 more tomorrow. Glad I filled up Sunday for $3.35/gal.

Gas went up 10 cents a gallon yesterday here in central PA. It is too bad that too many hands will touch this added money in Harrisburg before PennDot gets any.

Stations are already raising their prices in anticipation of this. Little bit of gouging going on since this tax has not yet hit the gas.

In this economy that is pathetic. It gets worse as everything is going up too in 2014! This country will never recover, but I don't think the federal or state governments care as long as they get their money, they are like robbers.

Well this will help fund the state highway program. This will also increase the amount of sales tax collected by the cities & counties too.

If they would just use the gas tax money for roads and not use if for other purposes then they probably wouldn't have to raise the tax!
