A recent study released by CarInsuranceComparison.com highlights states with the worst drives in the nation. The top 10 are listed below.

#10) North Dakota

Best Ranking Factor: Tickets: 6th
Worst Ranking Factor: Drunk Driving: 50th

North Dakota was not in the “Top 10? in a previous edition, but they’ve dropped three places with the latest statistical updates. They kept their Ticketing Rate low, but increases in the Drunk Driving and Fatality Rate categories leaving them with a lot of room for improvement.

#9) Montana

Best Ranking Factor: Tickets: 2nd
Worst Ranking Factor: Fatalities Rate & Drunk Driving: 51st (the worst possible rank)

This is a repeat albeit it a good one. Not surprised to see Mississippi in there especially when they are out of their home state, especially in Memphis!

No surprise that N Dakota and Montana have high accident fatality rates. The fatality rate is directly related to how quickly it takes emergency crews to respond and how fast they can get you to a real hospital. Alaska also is very high while states like NJ & MA are very low, they have very high population density and quick access to medical care.

A number of the top 10 were in moonshine country. Wonder if that hurt their numbers here. Regardless... drunk driving is no fun for anyone.

Surprising in some ways, but not entirely. The seemingly worst places are those that are really crowded (like NY, CA), but mistakes get amplified by the density of population. Those in the wide open spaces believe that they do not have the same boundaries and seemingly tend to be lax.
