With the worst of winter quickly approaching, Geico has put together some reminders for motorists who have to deal with the white fluffy stuff every winter.

From the driveway to the highway, getting your car unstuck and back on the road can be a pain. Unless you've already traded in your car for a snowmobile, you should be prepared for whatever the season throws at you (or piles on top of you).

First, make sure your car is winterized and ready for battle. Then follow these tips to make your trek into the winter wonderland a safe one.

The cardinal rule for de-icing your windows? Hot water is a no-no, unless you like that shattered glass look.

To begin, start your car and turn on the front and rear defrosters...

by using your front defroster, you are also using your air conditioner... it is better to turn on your heater to floor and vent and let the car warm up along with using your rear defroster at the same time, by doing this you save fuel and it will deice all your windows, not just the front one... also makes it easier to clean the ice off of all of the windows, and is the fastest way to get going...

Don't forget to store that liter of whiskey in the trunk just in case your car breaks down in the middle of a cold night!

jb: unfortunately, that's not going to happen. Maybe after some big shot's politician's child is injured or worse, but otherwise, doubt anything will happen.

I agree. Make road time mandatory with driving lessons---for all areas of driving.

If at all possible the safest and best thing to do is stay off the roads as much as possible during winter storms. There are a lot of fools out there.

Another tip they needed is to use your brains when you have a 4WD automobile. I've seen many people in the winter around here that think they can drive during a snow/ice storm like it's bare pavement just because they have 4WD. They fail to remember that sure 4wd might help you go but it doesn't help you stop. In fact I would say 75% of the automobiles I see in the ditch in the winter are 4WD.

as for tips, maybe we need to bring back mandatory driving schools that would teach such things?

Talking in the carpool this morning that with the first snow fall come slideoffs and accidents. People who live in an area where snow and winter are the main attractions (think 2002 Winter Olympic) would learn to drive in winter conditions and know what to do. But every year it's the same old thing. Worst are people with 4WD SUVs who think that they can do anything with the 4WD and learn the hard way that they are generally as vulnerable as anybody else.
