Author Topic: NHTSA: Traffic Fatalities Down 4.2% In The First Half Of 2013 Back to Topics

According to data released by the NHTSA, there's fewer fatalities on America's roads. Fatalities have been on the decline in the U.S., reaching an all-time low in 2011, but that direction reversed last year. Analysts expect to see an increase in roadway deaths of 8.2% which is higher than initial estimates, but lower than first fears.

That's the lousy news. The good news is that although numbers for 2012 likely won't be released until December, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is already predicting figures for 2013. If NHTSA's predictions are accurate, they'll bring the U.S. fatality rate back to near-historic lows.

In the first six months of 2013, 15,470 people died on America's roadways -- slightly more...

Should be good news, but there's been too many fatalities here in Oklahoma and unfortunately some I've known.

Gee I wonder why fatalities started climbing again last few yrs...maybe due to distracted driving & lack of laws/enforcement to keep it in line????

Just costs to dang much to get killed on the roads now-a-days. There are much cheaper ways to kill yourself.

I wonder if it is related to the number of younger adults not getting their licenses and just plain not interested in driving?

Thank government-mandated things like seat belts, air bags, ABS, tire pressure monitors and crash requirements for making today's cars safer.

New cars with better safety features are saving lives, but if the people can't afford them then the fatalities will go up again.

What would make fatalies go up is EV's. Pedestrians won't know what hit them if they didn't hear the car coming, especially blind people.

Not only has the number of fatalities fallen, but the rate has fallen. It's that second part that is more interesting.

People not driving as much.

Less time on the road means less chance of a fatality.

If people can pay attention to driving and avoid distractions, this could go even lower.

The frames for the cabins of autos are made a little more secure. You probably total your car but the passengers if buckled in and paying attention aren't fatally injured. Just hurt. Thankfully I am one of those not killed this year. But my car was totaled.

People are driving less, walking more, riding bicycles, car pooling and taking mass transit more. The vehicles they make now days, have no frame under the vehicle, and fold up like an according in even a 30 mph crash. It doesn't take much to total a vehicle now days.
