According to a monthly report by Michael Sivak and Brandon Schoettle from the University of Michigan, the average fuel economy of newly purchased vehicles in September fell from an August record high.

The average fuel-economy (window-sticker) value of new vehicles sold in the U.S. in September was 24.6 mpg. This value is down 0.3 mpg from August, likely reflecting the recent reduction in the price of gasoline. Despite this drop, vehicle fuel economy is up 4.5 mpg since October 2007 (the first month of our monitoring). For a description of the calculations and the recent mpg values, click here.

The average fuel economy of model year 2013 vehicles (vehicles sold October 2012 through September 2013) was 24.7 mpg. This...

One important thing to take away from this article is further proof that CAFE standards are increasing the fuel efficiency of the US car fleet and that the emissions of CO2 are falling both of which are very positive. It should give pause to those who are frustrated with government that good things do come from government intervention. These fuel efficiency increases and corresponding CO2 reductions would not have come if the OEMs had been left to make the decisions.

One report says fuel economy is down, another one says it's up. Who do you believe? Different sources, different results.

"A week ago a different study said they went up."

Maybe this statement from the article explains it:

......the average fuel economy of newly purchased vehicles in September fell from an August record high.

Talk about short term memory. Remember the oil embargo. Let's keep producing fuel efficient vehicles and make the oil last longer until we can think of a better way to get around.

Yes you do get what the sticker says if you do not have a lead foot. Bought new Cruze last year and sticker said 36mpg. I have got up to 38mpg on trips running at 65 and a/c on. Also have new Malibu and said 34 am getting 36 to 38 mpg on road running at 65 and a/c running. Keep your lead feet off gas pedal and you can get what it says on sticker.

Wow, 4.5 increase in 6 years. And Obama has picked an arbitrary 54.5 as the dictated level they must meet by 2025. Do the math. Instead of the 0.75 average we have seen in the last 6 years we must hit an average increase of 2.5 every year to make it. Another typical government unobtainable mandate.
