The cooler weather is in the air (at least here in Chicago), fall is coming, and summer spec gasoline is fading. All of which means the return of winter spec gasoline, and with it, spot gasoline prices are trading far lower this morning.

Spot gasoline prices are the prices that influence wholesale gasoline prices, which is the price that stations pay when filling their underground tanks. The fact that spot is down this morning is likely thanks to the changing of the guard- or in layman's terms, EPA's clean burning summer gasoline requirements were over as of September 15, and less expensive to make winter gasoline is returning.

So far this morning, all regions are looking at spot prices lower than last week, and that's...

johnnynmari: "Prices have not come down at all we are paying $3.95 a gal. It was only $3.52 three weeks ago. And it's still climbing."

Your state has different RVP requirements and dates than the rest of the country, so you're not going to see the drop like the rest of us. And then you have some refineries down as well.

Good to hear that price will be down, but at what cost? Winter fuel is not as good.

Winter gas can contain more volatile compounds- stuff that would evaporate in Summer heat( why loose gas cap causes CHECK ENGNINE light)

The Invasion of Iraq changed everything-it shut down Clintons oil for food program, along with Iraq's giant ocean of oil on march 20 2003-before that speculators could not speculate that oil prices would go up,in fact Iraq was set to pump more oil not less-that would have meant a drop in price not a rise. You cant have $20.00 or $15.00 a barrel oil and expect that very expensive frack and shale oil can compete--some in the frack and shale business say the price per barrel needs to be at least $60.00brl for frack and shale to be economically viable but most say the price needs to be more like $80.00brl----now China and Russia have their hands all over Iraq's cheap oil,so we wont be getting any of that-and we are stuck with oil that costs at least three times more to develop than middle east oil---the only way these ridiculous prices were achieved was the invasion, the deregulated banks and out of control speculation---exon mobile corporation made more money than any company on earth-ever,and they are just one oil company. The ethanol mandate signed into LAW in 2005 and 2007 dont help anything either----and Obama I'm sure will never break up any of these billion dollar disasters---and the oil companies are very happy with todays oil prices-and will have plenty of millions for the up-coming elections and with the corporations united ruling-they can and they will spend all the money they want----good luck.

Why don't we just us the same blend all year round so that when spring rolls around the prices don't jump up again?

Yeah, that is the reason gas is dropping.

It has nothing to do with removing the fear of world war III over Syria. (sarcastically speaking here)

Nothing dropping on Manatee Ave. W. in Bradenton,FL.Like everyone is at 3.55.Sure look like price fixing to me.Especially when Murphys' at Wal-Mart is only 3.35 for regular.Someone needs to investigate the stations here.
