With summer winding down, so too do the air temperatures, which brings a change the gasoline that Americans burn. In many areas across the U.S., summer fuels programs are going to begin concluding, meaning "winter gasoline" will soon begin to show up, and with it, potential relief at the pump.

The big day is September 15. That's when EPA relaxes its requirements across much of the U.S. for cleaner burning fuels. Summer gasoline burns cleaner, and generally costs more to produce- an expense that's passed on to motorists across the country. Reverting back to winter gasoline generally means cost savings and lower gasoline prices.

With the onset of winter gasoline comes a change in fundamentals as well- cooler temperatures...

for new diesel drivers, make sure you add some gasoline to the diesel when it gets very cold. Or you might find yourself with some ugly surprise.

I knew pump prices dropped at the start of school/end of summer but didn't know why. Thought it had more to do with lowered demand and greed...well, greed IS always there!

Why can't we just use the same gas all year round so refineries don't have to switch back and forth? I would think it would be easier.

We never understood the need for winter versus summer gas. This sounds bureaucratic to us and a way to make consumers pay more.

What is the real reason for such a high pump price???? There has to be a better way!!! Pump prices were under 50 cents a gallon 40 years ago and high wages were around $10 an hour.... Pump prices have raised many times
the wages have increased....
