When gasoline prices go up in your neighborhood it’s hard to imagine that anyone else has it worse. Who’s got the worst price volatility in the country? Which markets see the steepest price hikes? Where do the gas stations and convenience stores change the prices most frequently? GasBuddy found the answers.

“While major markets like LA, NY and Chicago get much of the attention and criticism, they’re not even in the top 20 among cities that see the steepest price hikes,” says Patrick DeHaan, senior petroleum analyst with GasBuddy.

“The steep price hikes recorded in more than 25 cities in the Midwest dwarf the increases seen in the rest of the country. And nowhere is it worse than Ft. Wayne, Indiana. So far this year...

We're reducing gasoline purchases by using our Leaf. Unless we're on a trip, we buy only one tank in two months.

Jackson, Michigan last week was 3.38 Thursday went up to 3.69 back down to 3.60. It will go back up to around 3.70 a gallon this week because of the holiday. There is no way I can believe that we are not being gouged. The polictions either have there head up somebodies A** or they are on the payroll of the oil compines. And by that I mean it starts at the top both Feds and state.

We have the opposite problem in my town. Prices don't move, I can log in a post gas prices for weeks without looking at prices 'cause they don't change even when the rest of the country is going down as much as .50 they are locked in place.

If the government would just put on extremely high taxes, like in Europe, the price fluctuations would go away.
So for me, the bright side is that with high fluctuations, I can be thankful that our taxes aren't the highest in the world. Also, when we get dips, I fill up. When they are high I drive the most ecconomical car.
I have two.

Visit Danville, Illinois all the stations have the same price most the time or a couple cents off. A monopoly that the state Attorney General should work on since the Federal "Holder" wont.

I lived in the Twin Cities for 10 years. There was a definite pattern to fluctuations in gas prices.

After a price increase, prices would drift down over the next two or three weeks. Then there would be a dramatic increase of 10-15 cents/gallon, and the increase would occur on the same day of the week as the last increase two or three weeks earlier.

Then the pattern would start over again.

Great article. In the NYC tri-state area, gas prices are so much cheaper the minute you cross out of NY & into NJ or PA... just like w/ everything else!

Watch out for the Conoco station in Ogalalla, Nebraska. They list regular for 3.54 but only 2 of 10 pumps have it at that price. Instead they try to sell you regular w/ethanol for 3.99! What a ripoff.

As usual, the national average price will be used to bury these local disparities. Rotational gouging has become standard procedure.

Wonder why Austin, Texas isn't on the list? The range here is $3.18 for a low and $3.69 for a high. That is a difference of 51 cents a gallon. Tells you something about the Vallejo station that is ripping the public on Barton Springs Road. I don't see how they stay in business.

Patrick was very "nice" in this article - he neglected to point out that he has statistics PROVING that these EXCESSIVE price fluctuations occur only in locations where Speedway stations have a significant percentage of the gasoline retail market share.

Just ONE of the reasons why I almost NEVER purchase gas at a Speedway station.
