Motorists beware- you may have seen motorcycles squeezing in between two cars on a clogged highway. Maybe you've seen them passing stalled traffic and got upset and said some choice words. I've seen some motorists even attempt to block them, taking the situation into their own hands in some cases. But in California, it is legal to lane split, and even more- if motorists attempt to block them or stop them- beware- it's against the law.

Besides- less motorcycles taking up full lanes means traffic will be slightly less congested, and that's good for everyone, right?

The California Highway Patrol, via its website, informs motorists "lane splitting in a safe and prudent manner is not illegal in the state of California." CHP...

It's is an outdated law from back in the air cooled engine days. Motorcycles would overheat if they could not move air over the engine.

I asked a trooper about not allowing a motorcycle to "share my lane" he stated he would ticket me for illegal lane change. I told he was wrong and backed him down with the question; "How can it be a lane change if I am within my own lane?"

Should cars be allowed to "lane split" between two motocycles?

that's good, yanges. That being said, I am hoping the driver is alive and well and not missing b/c of injuries or worse.

yanges: not cool - too bad you couldn't report him, but I can understand that some bike riders get frustrated w/ poor car drivers (like semi-truck drivers do with both bikes are cars) and may resort to self-justice of some sorts.

i a accidentally squeezed out a cycle rider on my way to work one day and this rider harassed me for weeks after that by pulling up by my window and revving the engine on his high end race bike.

I've seen people on motorcycles try to do this in Michigan, Indiana and Ohio and also seen them almost get killed...because this is illegal. I've seen them mostly try this on the highway where it is definitely not safe because the speed limit is 70 mph and people drive closer to 80 mph in Michigan.

And when these motorcycle drivers drive to another state they are going to get killed trying it. Not a safe thing to do.

Motorcycles allowed to lane split in CA? Amazing!!! This is very dangerous! The motorcyclist may get away with it for a while but the day will come when it will end for them, forever.
A motorcyclist is 'exposed' and not enclosed in metal like the driver of a vehicle!
Do Not split traffic lanes, stay in the proper traffic lane at all times (one motorcyclist - slightly left of center), make sure the vehicle in front of you can SEE you in their rear view and/or side mirror, ride with headlights ON, watch the front tire of the vehicle just before passing – that's the first indication of what the vehicle will do (turning left or right) and don't get cut off! Watch for aggressive vehicle drivers just looking to get back at motorcyclist that push the envelope!
Always Always watch yourself, nobody will do it for you!
Vehicle driver's should always look over their left shoulder before opening doors or right and left shoulders before changing lanes.
It does not help when the biggest offenders are the ones pushing this dangerous practice - the state police, CHP! ***So Wrong, So Very Wrong! Let's end this article so CHP can ride off into the distance!
Drive vehicles with high MPG, are very safe, reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money.
The price of fuel at the pump is too high!
