Wyoming's first fuel tax increase since 1998 has come into effect today, increasing the tax levied on a gallon of gasoline by a dime, even though it faced stiff opposition in the state legislature.

Wyoming officials have claimed that the increase in gasoline tax will net the state about $70 million more per year year with approximately two-thirds of that amount going to the Wyoming Department of Transportation and the rest being divided up between cities and counties. The increase will see taxes on each gallon rise from 14 cents to 24 cents.

Wyoming's current combined tax (including all levels of taxation- federal, state, and local) amounted to nearly 33 cents per gallon before the hike, the lowest of any of its neighbors...

Here in Montréal, gasoline taxes account for forty-nine cents per litre ($0.49/L). That's equal to about $1.85/US Gallon, since a US Gallon is equal to about 3.785L.

As fuel economy goes up and revenue for transportation goes down something has to be done so we can continue to have decent roads to drive on. Get a clue all of you moaners and groaners.

Just glad I'm not in California or Wyoming! But the politicans here are pushing to increase gas taxes all the time so I'm sure I will get to pay soon enough!

From the ease of raising taxes (and slowing down recovery) it would seem that not many legislators ever had to take a basic course in economics

So a gas tax is, in part, being divided to cities and counties? For what? Roads? Hmm... Let's hope there's no funny business happening here...
