Ladies and Gentlemen: diesel is back. Well really, it never left, but with diesel engines more efficient than their gasoline counterparts, and better fuel economy, auto manufacturers are beginning to bring vehicles to market with the more efficient engines.

Chevrolet is the latest to do so, with its 27/46mpg 2014 Cruze. After first showing up in Baltimore, Denver, Portland, Ore., and Milwaukee, the Cruze Clean Turbo Diesel will spread across the country by year's end.

Automakers are clearly trying to win back the American motorist with their clean diesels, which have certainly come a long way from the noisy, sooty diesels that existed in the 1970's. Gone from reality are the noisy, smelly, slow, and sooty diesels and here...

caroll - w/ diesel, it depends mostly how much you drive, i.e. if you only have a 5 or 10 minute commute, it's not worth it. When you have an hour or more, that's when the diesel really shines.

Depending on the state, Diesel is cheaper than Regular. I saw this in Ohio and Oregon. Maybe we need more states that start with the letter "O". My Jetta TDI has gotten as high as 58.6 MPG during the commute between DC and Baltimore. Now if they would just add Hybrid to the TDI...

OK, I did the math. Comparing the 2LT diesel to the 2LT gas engine, it costs an extra $2560.
Considering the better mileage, higher per gallon cost, and higher purchase cost, the payback at 15,000 miles per year is:

59 YEARS!!!!!!

Foolish!

If they are better than gasoline engines then let the market place decide.

What kind of premium is GM going to extract for the diesel vs the gasoline fueled Cruze? If they follow the VW model it will be around $4k to $5k for the privilege to own the diesel version. And then, one would have the privilege of buying diesel which is more expensive than premium gas. Now that's a deal to be avoided like the plague.

The price of diesel is at its highest. Does the MPG's offset the cost of the diesel used and the extra cost for the vehicle? Probably NOT....

General Motors is making a huge push on redesign on many vehicles in the lineup. This diesel is a badly needed update. The technology on their new 2014 Corvette engine allowing for 8 cylinders to cut back to four when not needed is another nice update. GO GM!

One good thing about this new diesel is it is built from the ground up as a diesel.
