Is there anything that can stop Tesla? Tesla Motors unveiled a system that will let drivers swap out the battery in a Model S in about 90 seconds, which is less time than it takes to fill up a traditional car at the pump.

According to CNN Money, Tesla hopes the new system will help overcome the fears that many drivers have about the convenience of electric cars.

At a demonstration in California Thursday night, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said the battery swap stations will be installed throughout the network of "supercharging" stations that Tesla is already installing around the nation. The supercharging stations currently provide free recharging in about an hour. Musk said the battery swap, which will cost between $50 and $80...

its not how long the recharging takes, it is how far does it take you???
Usually not very far, so it is not feasible for long trips

Today $65 in fuel would get me 300 miles city.
How far would I get in a Tesla?

This idea has been around for many years. It has to start with high end cars and hopefully will trickle down to vehicles that the majority of us can afford.

Ok, maybe it will take less time than filling up at the pump, but what's the range? How far can I after that $50-$80 battery swap?

Define "SWAP". What is the Life Cycle cost of the battery? Like to see overall life cycle cost and depreciation throughout the ownership years of such a high cost vehicle.

Cool. On a completely related note. Tesla is planning to open a warehouse in Las Vegas, NV. and they might invite the engineering students UNLV to test drive their cars, according to an ASME officer.

you would have to be in a big hurry to pay $80 instead of waiting for an hour. I would try to schedule it at lunch time. I'm sure there will be a restaurant nearby soon.

All well and good, but the limiting factor for battery cars will one day be the rare earth elements required to make them. The technology has supply chain viability now, since the number of batteries required is proportionally small. Guess what happens when you increase the number required by fifty to a hundred fold? Not thinking we'll be able to meet production demand to supply a two batteries for every car in the world.

It would have been nice if they had put the miles you get on a charge so I could have made a better educated comment.

bklynse: "This car is still too damned expensive."

LOL! It's all relative. In this case, it's relative to one's income.

This post reminded of something Robert Kiyosaki discusses about the mindset of most people. Most people spend more time and energy on complaining about lack of money, how expensive things are, etc. Very people put their mind to increasing their income circle, moving towards making "expensive" things affordable!

I personally would try to time a recharge with a meal, thereby eating while I am waiting for the free 1 hour charge. If I was in a big rush I would pay the exchange fee if it was at or close to $50. I rarely let my gas tank get below the 1/4 full level when traveling, therefore a refill of gas would be approximately $60. The issues are not only 'free' vs 'fast', but also the miles driven that a recharge vs refill of gas provides.

$50-$80 sounds like a lot of money for electricity, but I suppose it really depends on how many miles you can get off that quickie recharge.

Personally, with my Passat, I get around 850+ miles for around $60-$65 of diesel.
