Have you looked at the gas pump lately? Odds are if you're on the West Coast, you've been seeing the sign change to the up side. If you're in the Great Lakes, changes are you've been seeing prices roll back on a near daily basis. Regional issues are much of the reason for the discrepancy and differing trends as problems on one coast don't translate into problems on another coast.

Example: as prices in the Great Lakes have come down as much as 30c/gallon in the last week, prices in California have been heating up. Refining issues have abated in Great Lakes while they seemingly are just starting to pop up along the West Coast.

We've been asked night and day why prices could be $3.25 in South Carolina but $4.29 in Michigan...

alaydown thank you for your reply. The invasion of Iraq and the deal with Vnezuala(we were suposed to be afraid for some reason-I wonder what it was?)instantly doubled the price of fuel and in some areas fuel stations took it way higher.Crude oil went from $20barrel to $40barrell and stayed there or way higher with the exception of A few months at the peak of the cash, ironically much of the reason for the crash I belive was high fuel prices.God only knows how much these two profited(NO BID contracts to Cheneys"old company")instant 100% increase in price-how do you think that effects the pockets of people who live and breathe oil?how about oil for 5 times more?Iraqs oil was supposed to pay for the war-you know why it didn't,that would have dumped large amounts of crude on the market. So we got A trillion or more dollar debt and high gas prices I say Guilty as charged and so does most of the rest of the world. The point I am trying to make is that American oil production is expensive-they are fracking empty wells-playing with shale-drilling in sub Zero temps ect.We cant compete with open desert high pressure high quality oil.The game had to be changed so American oil could be profitable.Obama telling oil companies where they can or cant drill(I understand that is wrong also and I am not an Obama fan)is not going to significantly change the price. The supply was cut to increase profit, now you and I pay the price.Notice how we are now producing way more oil and the price is climbing?do you think thats an accident? Speculators taxes import export games-all of this needs to be changed-the only way any of this will ever be changed is if all of us get together and do something about it.Incresed oil production here is the result of high priced crude not the answer to it-the answer to high priced crude it to buy it from where it is cheap like we used to.

Yeah - Supply & Demand. I just get irked when they jump up 20-cents just because everybody else does. The same gas in the ground now costs more - even though they did NOT get a new (higher-cost) supply. To me - THAT is price gouging!!!

Just mass together and only buy from your local stations where the prices are lowest. Supply and demand can have a certain counter action to speculation's price hikes. The more expensive priced stations will have to reduce their prices when no one is buying at that price. What is nickels and pennies to us per gallon amounts to dollars to them by comparison.

fedupp, your posts have a very unique way of looking at the problem. The current price has nothing to do with Bush or Cheney, and you have stated nothing to back it up.

Your pricing of what the price SHOULD BE is completely arbitrary, and you seem to gloss over the fact that the price only went above $4 in mid-2008 and crashed when Bush eliminated the drilling moratorium offshore and increased the number of permits and leases on federal land and water. Obama reinstated the drilling moratorium, imposed illegal drilling bans for over 6-months, and severely reduced the drilling on federal land and water since he has been in office. He even tried to obstruct drilling on private and state land when he indicted oil companies for the deaths of a few birds while giving a pass to the wind farm companies who kill over 400,000 birds each year. His monetary policy reduced the value of the US dollar even further which also drove up oil prices.

Looking back at the 11-year chart (max available on this website), you will see the price remained essentially below $3 per gallon until 2007 with only a very brief spike a few cents above $3 in mid-2005. If you look at the EIA data from 2001 until 2004, the price remained below $2 per gallon. You can see that the price peaked briefly at $2.064 in 2004 and did not remain above $2 until 2005. The price spiked very briefly to $4.114 in July 2008.

It was about $1.83 when Obama took office. Since he took office, he has obstructed domestic oil production as I have already stated above, and the price went up and has not been below $3 since Dec 2010. So why is that Bush's fault and not Obama's fault after 4.5 years of Obama?

The Bush and Cheney families are oil families they have A very big interest in what the price of oil is.They have investments in oil leases in Texas Alaska the gulf,Cheney ran halliburton(they extract oil, provide infastructure, drilling equipment, get no bid contracts ect.)If the price of oil is low they loose money if the price of oil is high they make money.Oh wait the price of oil is always high now-wow thats A pretty good deal those guys must be real lucky, there is no way they would have used their power to say invade an oil rich country and more than Quadruple the price of oil?----no well I guess it must be Obamas fault.Solase yes he should have done somthing-anything to help.

DocWyeth - "Unless our govt was to nationalize the industry but that is socialism or communism, wait they are already doing that with health care"

Funny, I'm not seeing any doctors, hospitals, clinics or insurance companies being nationalized.

Simple. If they can not make a profit they go out of business. Unless our govt was to nationalize the industry but that is socialism or communism, wait they are already doing that with health care while they got out of regulating the phone/airline/power industries.

Can we work together? can we do anything about this?I dont see us going anywhere with oil at or above $100.00 barrel.Drill baby drill is just A slogan it actually seems to cost us more(our oil is expensive to extract)other countries are gaining access to giant quantities of oil from the middle east-if all we are going to do is play import export games and develop our oil resources the price will never go down.

And refiners in California wouldn't support the new pipe line from Oklahoma.
They want to bring the Oil and alcohol in by rail.
Every wonder why Buffet decided the rail business is the great investment?

Same in Canada good drops in some areas, increases in others & even 1-2 day predictors saying going up are often wrong (thank god its this direction rather than reverse). But obviously our regions react differently ie Gr. Lakes has been rising past few days & remained unchanged today despite predictions of increases - why so different if we import so much gas & oil supply is at least similiar?????
My answer is greater greed north of the border by much the same oil co's - ie. remember our gas remains at least $1.50 /gal Cdn more than most of US.

alaydown the answer to your question is simple-the only time in the last ten years that oil was only 50% too much was in 08 at the peak of the crash(much of the crash caused by oil that was 5 times higher than a few years before) for the rest of that ten years it was between 100%and 350%higher than it should have been-it doubled the moment we went into Iraq.We are paying around $100 dollars A barrel today to me thats 5 times too much-Ps I dont like Obama either but there was now way in hell I could vote for Mcain&simple sarah or Romney-Ryan.Mcain would have started world war 3 and Romney would have at least went into Iran, just think what that would do to the price of fuel.
