Motorists across the United States are all experiencing a crazy summer at the gas pump. The West Coast saw sticker shock first, but that situation has cooled. Then the Corn-belt states in the Midwest saw record high gasoline prices that have since cooled. Now the focus has shifted to the Great Lakes where new all time record highs have hit.

While all of these events have led motorists to experience varying amounts of pain, it has kept analysts such as myself and my colleague very busy. And perhaps the least busy thing has been the U.S. national average which has stayed in a relatively tight 12-cent per gallon range over the last month even given all of this regional volatility.

So what shapes up from here? Well one thing...

funny, diesel is still about the same - 60 cents from the lower end of gasoline prices. That means, the economy is not going to recover soon b/c the high priced diesel costs everyone who eats or drinks anything or consumes other goods (unless you're totally selfsufficient).

Fuel efficent cars sound great-but what about your RV boat 4wheeler jet ski 4x4 truck dirt bike tractor ect.High fuel prices stop people from buying things going places repairing their houses traveling to see family and so on.Probably the bigest reason our economy has been flat at least 6 years. We as A people absolutely must get these prices way down if we want any kind of future.

China got most of the oil contracts auctioned off in Iraq (USA companies got none)We wont be buying oil from Venezuala (W-Cheney made sure of that) So our energy future is pumping the most volatile chemicals on earth down empty oil wells, and expensive shale? The price of oil has to stay sky high to develop this garbage.-----this is what happens when you let oil men run your government and oil companies dictate our energy policy.they shut off cheap sources of oil (Iraq Venezuala others)and sell you their leftover crap for 4 times too much.

Prices in Denver spiked around $0.85 and have drifted down about $0.40 but not back to previous prices.

Why have gas prices increased from $1.87 (more than double) the day Obama took over? He has stated he sees nothing wrong with $6 - $7 gas prices as long as they "don't rise too fast."

The koch brothers have paid over 100million dolars to rt wing causes. Why? because they will get hundreds of billions in return. That slimy pipeline they are running from Canada is not for you and me ITS FOR EXPORT.They dont care if you or me can afford fuel to bad stay home and good luck.None of this frack and sand crap would have been worth it if oil was still $14-$18 a barrel. The war on terror fixed that.Or if you listen to fox entertainment its Obamas fault.Ps he sucks too.

Most people did not notice that all Bush$Cheney accomplished whith their war on terror was to quadruple the price of fuel. That was their intent both of their families are heavily invested in oil futures extraction leases they cant have oil for $18.00 a barrel.they want to sell their frack oil and shale sand (the waste thats left over from when US oil ran out 30+years ago. That oil is not cheap or easy to get so the price must remain high.

wegman said: "the replacements are unproven, more expensive, don't work very well and in some cases (ethanol from cellulose) don't exist."

Just more government stupidity that adds to the cost of gas...

"Refiners are now stuck between a rock and a hard place. They are required to blend a nonexistent product—cellulosic biofuels—and have to pay a fee to the government because it does not exist."

Tight market. Unnecessarily so because too many people high in government (unfortunately including the President of the United States) think that high density fuels with a proven track record and a substantial infrastructure built around them are evil and need to be replaced. Unfortunately, the replacements are unproven, more expensive, don't work very well and in some cases (ethanol from cellulose) don't exist.
