The Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) today launched a test of an “all-way” pedestrian crossing at the downtown intersection of State Street and Jackson Boulevard, which allows pedestrians to cross to any corner – including through the intersection – during a special traffic signal phase that stops all vehicular traffic.

“This new all-way crossing will improve the pedestrian environment and vehicular timing at this very busy downtown intersection,” said CDOT Commissioner Gabe Klein. “Chicagoans and visitors will be able to cross on foot more quickly and safely while all vehicular traffic is stopped. This is part of our strategy to eliminate as many conflicts as possible for everyone's safety and enhanced vehicle throughput...

Here's an idea.

Get rid of crosswalks and all the walk/don't walk lights.

No one around me uses them anyway. Everyone crosses when they want to and where ever they want to.

Not painting crosswalks and putting in the lights could save $15,000 per intersection over the 10-15 year life span of the lights and painting once or twice a year.

How about a system of catapults and circus nets? You'd never have to stop traffic for the pedestrians except for the occasional failure of a catapult to get a 400-pounder all the way to the other side of the street!

grant: thanks for straightening the "memory" of some folks.

It reminds me of the the year Atlanta saw more than 1/4th of an inch snow... "we never had snow in Atlanta..." Umm... reeeeeaaaaalllly??? I can't remember a year I didn't drive through Atlanta to a dog show where there wasn't some snow event. But alas, it never snowed before in that town. LOL

Ever? Not hardly. This is an old idea. They had crosswalks like this in downtown Huntington, W.Va, in the 1960s. A bell rang when the light cycled red for all traffic and it was ok for pedestrians to cross the "X".

I like the single file , two lane corner to corner system. if you add people crossing through the intersection at all angles you could see more people tripping over each other.

Sounds like a waste of time and money! Why can't traffic engineers focus on getting the traffic signals synchronized?

That's a great idea to halt all traffic for pedestrians. As of now if you have the walk light you still have to watch for cars turning that can run into you.

They have those at some intersections by the University of Southern California. I think they are helpful because, when it's time for vehicles to go, they aren't waiting for pedestrians, and traffic can flow.

Nice for the pedestrians but my guess is that it will backup more car traffic.

Chicago begins trial of craziest crosswalk ever! We have almost the same thing here with a bicycle crossing at an intersection. The bicycle wheel is placed in the painted 'green box' (a buried metal detector) at the corner of the intersecction, wait for the traffic signal to activate and all vehicle traffic is stopped. It works very well and everyone is able to cross the intersection safely. This bicycle intersection is connected to a major bike path with a lot of vehicle taffic at the intersection and lots of bike traffic on the path, there is no other way to get away from the intersection - you have to cross it.
These type of crosswalks have been around for a long time. Not so crazy, Huh?
Drive vehicles with high MPG, are very safe, reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money.
The price of fuel at the pump is too high!
