Motorists in Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, and Wisconsin: brace yourselves. You're the next to see your prices spike, and it appears much of the increase is due to a yet-to-be-determined refinery glitch.

Spot gasoline prices, which are used to determine wholesale gasoline prices, and thus retail prices, have jumped sharply in the region. In fact, the only region seeing higher spot prices today is the Great Lakes (or called "Chicago") region. This is due to trade rumors of a refinery "caught" buying gasoline from other refineries. Typically this happens when a refinery suffers an unexpected glitch resulting in lower gasoline production. The affected refinery is then forced to buy gasoline on the market to cover its previous contractual...

Refinery glitch translated = 1) Miscellaneous price boost or 2) We are covering up a problem that might get out by pretending we owned up to it in a vague fashion...

PD, did they ever figure out what refinery glitched? As long as it's not owned by Phillips 66 or Shell, it will be fine by me!

talking to you people about the rediculous price of fuel at least makes me feel A little better. Its good to know that there are many other people out there that know what A giant heap of B-S big oil is feeding us.Fuel prices to me should be the #1 political issue that needs to be handled,we could drop the price 300% if we could all work together.(its good to have dreams)

Interesting this is, refinery utilization is up and so is gasoline supply according to the EIA data.

Did anyone ever figure out what this "unknown refinery problem" was?

any excuse to raise prices will do , how else can you constantly have record profits. But so much of the profits go to overseas companies. we need energy independence now, we have the innovation.

Spot price trades for gasoline jumped another 16¢ today in Chicago. Clearly the problem while unknown is also unresolved. Another round of pump price hikes is likely tomorrow. The net jump at least in the Chicago area will be well in excess of the 10-20¢ in the article.

mpgmustang, that is the only good thing about Speedway, they have a sign visible from the interstate that shows that they've beaten every other station in getting their price increased. I use that sign weekly to tell me to top off at another station before they all get on board with the price increase. I only buy from them if I am traveling and there is no other option when I run low. Or, if a kind individual buys me a gas card that happens to be Speedway.

Have family and friends in the Detroit area. They are whining to high heaven that gas prices jumped 30 cents overnight for whatever reason.
Average price for regular starts at about $4.19 a gallon.
