Author Topic: Forecasters predict busy hurricane season, impact on gasoline prices possible Back to Topics

Forecasters at NOAA released guidance on what they expect for 2013's hurricane season, with seven to 11 hurricanes expected. A normal year averages six named hurricanes.

Hurricane season begins in just over a week, and with the recent forecast release, motorists should be prepared for possible impacts that major storms may have on gasoline prices.

Ever since Katrina hit back in 2005, gasoline prices have become seemingly more sensitive to major storms and hurricanes, likely because of the extensive damage that Katrina inflicted with the direct hit of a major refining and oil production hub.

Last year, Hurricane Sandy again reminded us that gasoline prices and supply is vulnerable to a major storm.

fires, floods.... whatever, just another excuse to hike up the price, its really the amount they hike it up, sometimes in excess of 30 cents, come on realistically?? I am also amazed at the difference just between counties. I see Manistee Co in Michigan is over the top all the time. Why is there no oversight for this gouging?

This above average forecast happens every year. Funny, isn't it how you never hear about a forecast being below expectation.

Hurricanes are as good excuse to raise prices as any other excuse.

I wonder why this is. We have a refinery in Melvindale, MI. I do not remember the last time a hurricane hit Melvindale.

Weather guessers have missed big time this year. On the other hand, there's enough time to cram in another Sandy yet this year.

so much for this prediction, unless a surge comes up ...

Only 2 cat 3 storms to date!!! we are on the downhill side of this season

"Since 1851, roughly 75 percent of all the major hurricanes (Category 3 or higher) have formed during the months of August and September. Given that we've almost made it through September, and are headed for the final two months of the hurricane season, this raises the question of how rare it would be to go an entire season without a major hurricane in the Atlantic."

One more "constant": the failure of forecasters to predict "busy" hurricane seasons!

Perhaps it is time to add a third category to the constants of the universe: death, taxes and rising fuel costs.

KY: try again. Second storm already went through the Gulf. May not directly hit the US, but it does affect the rigs in the Gulf.

GS: although we haven't seen much, aside from TS Andrea, there were already several Invest systems in the Atlantic areas (incl. Caribbean, Gulf of Mexico, Atlantic).

I take your stupid comments as insulting. Climate change is a trap for stupid fools like you. Grow up little boy and take some science classes in school. You are too gullable. Too bad . I can fix ignorance but nothing can fix stupidity, But good luck.

43: the climate is changing. Obviously you noticed that. Global warming is only a part. Just because it's not in your backyard, shows how small minded you are. Look around in other parts of the world.
