West Coast motorists prepare: gasoline prices will likely start or continue moving higher in the upcoming days and perhaps weeks as supply has tightened considerably.

Wholesale gasoline prices, a significant factor in which direction retail prices move, have risen sharply in the last week as the California Energy Commission highlights supply tightness in its Weekly Fuels Watch Report.

According to the CEC, supplies of non-California gasoline (generally for use in Oregon and Washington states) remains very tight and sits a whopping 15.3% lower than where inventories were a year ago. California reformulated gasoline supply was down 10.1% versus last year. And the picture isn't great- extensive refinery maintenance on the...

The irony here is that whoelsale gasoline prices quoted on the NY Mercantile Exchange are little change and if anything are flat to down since the May 7th post.

Unless the author is looking at stale data when the article is released the most I can point to in order to corroborate the article/post is a rise of ~10 cents in wholesale prices from a closing low of $2.72/gal on May 1st to a closing high of $2.83 on May 7th. Still, an 11 cent move in wholesale should not equal a near-40 cent move in pump gas.

This reaks of collusion and the retail gas stations, not "big oil," seem the most likely culprits.

Totally rigged -- again -- + 28 cents here in a few days. PD, if you believe it's supply -- you've drunk the koolaid.

@99dakota is right... all these drill baby drill people vote against anyone who ever mentions a diverse energy policy proposed by any politician.

There are those in California that are borderline paycheck to paycheck. Any relief in gas would really help.

I agree,... it get's down to who you put into office, and MOST are not involved enough in the candidates to even know how they feel or vote on the policies

People in these states vote for politicians that do not support energy friendly policies. Thus they reap what they sow in higher prices...

Those of us that live here in California are again subject to the manipulation of supply by the oil companies and speculators. We go through this every year and have to listen to the lame excuses about 'maintenance' and the such. I just wish somebody with some backbone would be elected in Sacramento that would put an end to the California formulation and let us us the 49 state gas the rest of the country uses.

There is no shortage of crude oil available, but its a fact that refineries in California are not being operated at the maximum level. Its a case of producing less and charging more for gasoline.

Yesterday, GB was saying west coast prices were going up in one article and another said they're going to go down because of the Canadian crude being shipped to both the east and west coasts by rail. Guess more available crude cannot stop Big Oil from doing what they want.
