Falling gas prices has been great news for just about everyone except Toyota: Prius sales are taking a hit.

Toyota had previously expected to sell a quarter million of the hybrids in various formats in 2013, perhaps asking too much against a decline in gasoline prices. Leave it to Americans to stop buying fuel efficient cars when gas prices decline. Toyota recognized that gas prices could be a culprit, telling various sources that gasoline gas prices may endanger the goal.

"It'll be a challenge," Lentz said of meeting the goal in an interview with Bloomberg. "We'll continue to push Prius and Prius family, but if it ends up that demand is less than the sales forecast, that may be adjusted."

As vehicle sales numbers...

I think all of the 40+mpg non-hybrid cars are hurting them too. Why would I buy a Prius, when I can buy a 40+mpg Dodge dart, and invest the $5,000-7,500 into my IRAs? I've been getting a 15-23% return on my choices so I'm not about to give away my money that has been growing without issue.

Toomygun45:
"The Prius was mentioned on CNN a couple weeks ago that the Gov. told Toyota they had to back off their claim of what they said that car was getting on MPG. American made cars out weigh the savings those little foreign boxes try to say they get in gas mileage."

Can you post a link to that story? I've owned a Prius for 8 years now and it has consistently delivered better performance than Toyota advertised. So, I find your claim rather hard to believe.

"Toyota will try anything to say they are out selling GM."
Is that your opinion or a fact? If the latter, can you cite reliable, unbiased sources to support that?

"People in China etc are now buying more American cars then they are Toyota keeping GM # 1"
LOL! The history between those two countries has quite a lot to do with it.

Unlike gm, Toyota didn't need a massive, tax-payer funded govt bailout to pay for the mistakes their management made over several decades.

The Prius remains a visionary vehicle. When work began on the technology, gas prices were a fraction of what you see today. In 2005, when consumers were waiting for months to buy a Prius, GM's Lutz was publicly deriding hybrids. That was utterly stupid, as GM made an about face 18 months later, increasing Toyota's lead in that area.

I look at facts, not mere opinions!

give it a few months and people will be running for hybrids, as the trouble worsens in the Mideast. we really need a good energy policy.

Really?? I didn't think gas prices were that LOW. Brainwashed into 3.50 to 4.50 gas as being lower. Not me, it won't be considered low to me until it's $2.50 a gallon. And my friends THOSE DAYS ARE OVER!!

These people are falling into the trap that Big Oil wants. They think that the pump price has been reduced. Yes it has, but it is still way overpriced.

I love my Prius, too! I routinely get 50+ mpg. Makes it hard to get into my Grand Prix (love how that drives, hate the city mpg) unless it's a road trip.

bisonjim: "The Prius is priced too high, for what you get."

Really? Would you be willing & able to quantify your assertion?

I've owned a Prius since July 2005. Both the initial purchase price & tcoa I've experienced, easily belie your assertion.

"Prius sales slowing on lower gas prices"

And when gas prices go back up so will the sale of the Prius go back up.

Another misleading headline: Toyota did not meet Prius sales goals should be the title. It appears Toyota sold more Prii this year than last. They just didn't sell the number they hoped. And, there are many more choices for hybrid buyers than in the past. The hybrid market soared to 2.4 million in 2012.

Gas has jumped from $3.47 - $3.89 in one week time. Where's that lower gas price? Because I liked to buy some less expensive gas.
