A police officer in Florida has been told he's out of a job for not writing a lawmaker a speeding ticket last November. Florida Highway Patrol trooper Charles Swindle stopped Representative Charles McBurney, from Jacksonville, last November after he clocked the lawmaker going 87mph in a 70mph zone.

At the time, McBurney was driving a vehicle with a special license plate which identified his being in public office, and the trooper decided to cut him a break. However, the situation bothered McBurney so much that he decided to write the troopers superiors using a letter bearing the state seal and identifying himself as a lawmaker.

McBurney indicated in the letter that the trooper acted in such a way that could undermine the...

This politician should have insisted the officer write him a ticket if he truly thought he should get one instead having him fired.

"Datsundriver" honda0105 is correct. I don't know where you have been, but all caps denoting yelling has been an accepted no no for years. Read this article and you might learn something. http://www.education.com/reference/article/proper-computer-etiquette/ By the way it's not the only one about the subject

Lawmaker is trying to be over smart and create headlines with his powers he has.Lets see if the lawmaker would do the same after he steps down from this current post or retires and if he drives at 87mph and if a cop doesn't give him a ticket, will he still write a letter ? he would never do that .

honda0105: IN THE OLD DAYS COMPUTERS ONLY USED UPPER CASE LETTERS.
THAT IS YOUR OPINION THAT ALL UPPER CASE IS NOT APPROPRIATE.
IF YOU THINK IT IS YELLING TURN DOWN YOUR HEARING AIDE.
IT CAN BE USED FOR EMPHASIS.
SHOW ME THE "RULE" ABOUT ALL CAPS, AND THEN TELL ME WHO MADE THE "RULE".

no good deed goes unpunished

hope all the cops in the area watch for that vehicle, and write it up for every time it is one mile over the speed limit, or for impeding traffic if it is one mile under in the left lane, or parked one inch too far from the curb, or one inch too close to an intersection or fire plug, or every other nit-picking thing they can find on the jerk

This is so wrong. The Rep. should have thanked the officer instead of making him lose his job. Hope Charles McBurney loses his job & the people don't vote him back in.

"MiataPrincess" says "old news""Turbo0 said it best" There is nothing wrong with "old news." It is only old to those who have seen it before. To those of us seeing it for the first time, it isn't old news. We can't see every item everyday, every minute. Different items show up in different areas as well, and may be missed in one thread and seen in another.

the politician was just being proactive through "honesty" because he knew it would get out sooner or later, in a small way leading to a big way.

BDNN: no need to shout on this board (ALL CAPS is considered yelling on the internet). Most of us have some pretty good hearing and, I for one, would like to keep it that way.

Talk about lose/lose! One wonders if the trooper had written a ticket to the lawmaker if he wouldn't have been sanctioned for that behavior!

THIS IS NOT THE 1ST TIME I'VE SEEN A TROOPER 'NOT' WRITE A TICKET TO A PUBLIC OFFICIAL, FELLOW POLICE OFFICERS AND FIREMAN (ALL OFF-DUTY, NOT ON OFFICIAL BUSINESS AT THE TIME). IT REALLY DOES DEPEND ON THE TROOPER OR OFFICER 'ON-DUTY', AND MOST DEFINATELY HIS MOOD AT THE TIME. I HAVE FRIENDS AND FAMILY IN ALL 3 AFOREMENTIONED JOBS, AND HAVE BEEN TOLD WHAT THE 'REAL-DEAL' IS. ALSO BEEN TOLD THAT USUALLY, THE OFFICERS ARE TOLD AT THEIR DAILY BRIEFINGS, THAT THE GENERAL PUBLIC SHOULD BE TICKETED AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE ... 'NO-BREAKS' FOR THE LITTLE-GUYS LIKE YOU AND ME IN THE 'GENERAL-PUBLIC' RANKS. ALTHOUGH, I WILL SAY THAT I'VE SEEN SOME OFFICERS 'GIVE-WARNINGS' INSTEAD OF TICKETS ... WHICH SEEMS TO BE A BETTER WAY OF ENFORCING THE LAWS EQUALLY TO ALL.

More on this subject from many links on the Internet.>>>Trooper Charles Swindle, a six-year veteran of the Florida Highway Patrol, is appealing his March 15 firing and says the state highway patrol has an unwritten policy of not issuing tickets to lawmakers who set the patrol’s budget, a charge the agency hotly denies but which raises new questions about whether politicians get favored treatment on Florida’s highways.

The Law Maker is McBurney that represents Jacksonville. It would be nice if the citizens of Jacksonville put McBurney out of a job when he wants our vote again. Im sure he has done more things to be "ashamed" of then getting out of a speeding ticket, since he is a politician.

I hope the Jax folk will vote that guy out of office. Even though he shouldn't have gotten a break, he could have made a donation to a charity as a way of retribution if he was that bothered. Now someone lost their job. Great work ... not!

I think the discretionary part of the troopers job should stay. A lot of times the driver may not realize how fast they are going. They are just staying with the pack. Trying not to be a hinderance on the road. They should not give lawmakers a break just because they are political figures. If they know they are lawmakers /politicans/cops they should hold them to a higher standard not a lower one.

I agree with Turbo on his comment about old news. Some just write that in for points and jump to another Topic to write the same thing. Should be no points unless you leave least a 10 word comment.

I think think McBurney should resign to from feeling guilty of all the laws thats passed that takes away more of our rights along with the kick backs politians get along with campaign promises to get in our pockets.

The people of Florida should DEMAND this State Trooper gets his job. It must be election time for McBurney and he wants to look like a good guy as the 535 in Congress does to pull the wool over our eyes until they are elected.
