Good news today admist a rising number of refinery closures that have gripped the sector- another facility is set to expand. CHS today announced their plans to boost capacity at its mid-continent refinery in McPherson, Kansas.

The long term trend in the refining sector has been to close smaller refineries or to expand existing more profitable facilities, and this expansion, no matter what reason, will help offset the recent decline in refining capacity. The refinery in question is no doubt well positioned to accept crude from the Bakken formation in North Dakota, a likely contributing factor in the decision to expand.

In a press release, CHS states that the refinery expansion will begin this spring, and once completed,...

good news for us drivers. More domestic production and being landlocked, most likely this extra 15K barrels a day will stay in the US.

I thought Motiva, Pt Arthur-Groves, TX area was not growing. They want to be the largest refinery in the area. Is that true?

Refined oil is exported to artificially create shortages so prices can be increased.

Another refinery seeks to expand amid shift, they have seen a need for extra oil refining for the Bakken crude oil and natural gas source.
Produce fuel from US sources, for use in the US only. No Exporting of fuel allowed unless there is a huge excess of crude oil and fuel!
More Refineries are Not the answer, Stop exporting fuel is!
Drive vehicles with high MPG, are very safe, reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money.
The price of fuel at the pump is too high!

This is an excellent idea because expanded refineries mean more production which is always a good thing. Besides, I would imagine that is it much less expensive to expand an existing refinery than to build one from scratch.

Good news for the expansion but bad news for the decision to shut down a less profitable refinery. EPA new rules make it unprofitable to modify older refineries as necessary to meet new EPA "regulations". An EPA "running rampant" in the HO administration could feasibly cause the closure of a lot of refineries in America, thus boosting the necessity to import fuel. Lack of reasonable development and production of natural energy resources in America is a big factor leading to a legacy of a failed presidency for the HO.

I don't understand why refineries are shutting down, we're still finding oil and there is still quite a demand for refined products, are the existing refineries getting that much more efficient?
