According to a monthly report by the University of Michigan, the average fuel economy of newly purchased vehicles during the month of February 2013 has hit an all time high.

The average fuel-economy (window-sticker) value of new vehicles sold in the U.S. in February was 24.5 mpg. This ties the record high reached in January and is up 4.4 mpg from the value in October 2007 (the first month of our monitoring). For a description of the calculations and the recent mpg values, click here.

The University of Michigan Eco-Driving Index (EDI)--an index that estimates the average monthly emissions of greenhouse gases generated by an individual U.S. driver--stood at 0.80 in December. This value indicates an improvement of 20%...

I had a coworker get some 50 mpg some 20 years ago. So modern MPG should be higher not lower!

This is just silly. The tests are supposed to deliver objective data if properly conducted. Of course, most of the tests are conducted by the auto companies that do have an incentive to turn out the best numbers possible.

First, the mileage ratings are an offshoot of emissions testing. Secondly, they are supplied for comparison purposes only and NOT to predict the mileage any driver will get. That's to say that if car A gets better mileage than car B, a driver will get better mileage from car A but just what that mileage will be depends on many variables beyond the reach of EPA testing procedures.

Many people get better mileage than the EPA predictions because they know how to drive efficiently. Those who don't will almost always be able to improve their driving efficiency. In my own experience, I've never gotten less than the EPA prediction from my Ford Ranger and my overall average is over 4 MPG better.

I'll stick with my older paid for vehicle even if it only gets 14.5 miles per gallon.

better gas mileage has led to poorer road conditions. Oh the irony.

There are great inventers out there who have proven that you can get low and great mileage from any engine. However they are stonewalled by funding from banks and the like, and blocked by patents. I'm sure government's and big oil companies have close eyes on them. It would be disastrous to all if you had a automobiles that could run, last and use less parts. Where would they get all that extra tax money from?
They do not want to upset that slice of pie.

Not sure I trust the numbers. At least the study was done by someone other than the federal government.

Is that trustworthy info? Shouldn't there be an
independent review exposure of this data? First
question to be addressed in such independent review
is what are politics and leanings of U of M? Then
should be an independent study/examination of the
independent body checking into U of M! This all
because of doubt that anyone can be trusted! Then
should there be a 'greed' level test of all involved
to make sure this common disease isn't/won't
detrimentally impact the desired results.

Mileage is poor because of extreme emission standards by the EPA.

And look -- everyone is fine! The higher federally required standards are working! A major breakthrough in technology would help, but still.

Better mpg is a combination of better technology and better driving habits. Neither one by itself is sufficient.

What they post on the car means nothing, what the average is after driving them, is what counts.

But we still have way to much reliance on foreign oil and giving money to countries that hate us.
We have to all push the powers that be to let other clean reliable technologies to be actually used in our country. Lets lead the world again and get back to our place in it.

I'm still not impressed with these numbers as I've owned vehicles that got better mileage than that, 20 odd years ago.
