For years, alternative fuel vehicles appeared to be a somewhat futuristic dream for environmentally concerned individuals but today they are a reality for an increasing number of US consumers.

The latest research from Mintel shows that sales are up an astounding 73%, with nearly 440,000 hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and electrics sold thus far this year. The rapid sales growth in hybrid and electric vehicles makes the segment the fastest growing in the US for 2012, supplanting the still fast growing, compact car vehicle segment.

The number of plug-in and electric models available to the public has nearly quadrupled over the year too (from 3 models in 2011, to the 11 available today). And, despite the dramatic growth in 2012...

Wait until the fossil fuel regulation hit with fury. The electricity prices will spike.

25-34 - buying to impress others. probbly has enough income to do it without even thinking of how the extra cost will ever pay for it self in savings. When they line up trying to recharge they can watch the cars on gas drive by. Hy brid, electric not wanted by us.

No surprise when gasoline hits record highs. Nice that the Chevy Volt offers a choice of 'fuels' for the most frequent trips Americans take.

The statistics are just being interpreted as they want. If you sold 2 hybrids last month and then sold three this month, sales would be up 50%. The number sold compared to gas powered vehicles is miniscule.

That's not all you also paid about twenty to twenty five percent of the purchase price in the form of " tax intensives".

What good does it do if there is a great expense to get and keep the vehicle running (gas, electric, etc.) I'm all for alternative measures but it's all talk and little action.

I think the number is relative to the fear that we are running out of oil and prices of fuel were going to skyrocket.

People are more informed about these new technologies but I think the cost of gas will be a big factor in purchasing these vehicles.

Love my Duramax diesel pickup, and is very cost effective in the long run.
I also pay highway use taxes, unlike some alternative fuel vehicles...
