Finding gasoline in the areas hardest hit by Hurricane Sandy has been about as easy as finding a needle in a haystack, which has led GasBuddy developers to come up with an innovative way to track where gasoline (diesel availability is not covered at this time) is available.

The tool is immediately available for those in the affected regions by visiting gasbuddy.com/sandy from a web broswer via desktop, or mobile phone connection. Due to the approval process for smartphone apps, this tool will be web-based only at this time, but GasBuddy is looking into ways to permanently have such a feature in its smartphone apps as well.

GasBuddy spotters in the region are urged to update the fuel availability information so that motorists...

I was in NYC when the storm hit and got stuck there for 5 extra days. It was total chaos. And no subways or buses made it worse. I am glad GB was thoughtful to put this in place. WalkingWV makes a great point for users to add to comments, especially in these rare circumstances. My thoughts and prayers are with the people who lost homes and loved ones in this tragedy.

You can be sure that flooded areas are apt to have water flooded tanks if they are underground. A little water in the gas goes a long way.

it would be nice if the gas stations had (mandatory?) generators so that in the wake of storms and other disasters, gasoline and diesel could be had.

by the way, if a gas station has more then 3 inches of water in there tanks the veeder root alarm system would shut down the stp ( Sub turbine pump.). So water not an option.

sounds to me like you been robbed. people are stealing gas like crazy. If there was that much water in your tank your car would not run, period. if the car is running normally, and you dont smell a gas leak, or see one, then make sure your cap locks...

I need a little advise. I filled my tank at a Mobil station in Elmsford, NY around 4am on Monday, I have driven about 60 miles since and I am down to a half tank. I drive a Corolla which is very good on gas, I spoke with someone who knows a lot about cars and his feedback was " there may be water mixed in with the gas". Is this even legal to do?
Normally a full tank will last more than a week now half tank has lsted only one day, how much damage will this do to my car and can it be repaired?

any progress forward is a good thing, but I'm reading some negative posts as well. If you can't say something worthwhile...as in helping the weak to become strong..then shut up !

When we were without power after the derecho back in June, GasBuddy members just put details in the comment area with the prices. Info like, "out of gas, long lines, no waiting, just got a delivery, closed/open", etc. No need for a special site, just need members to use the existing one at it's full potential.

Still a good thing though.
