A near death experience for a seasoned state trooper has brought the trooper to request that motorists and truckers recognize what is a law in nearly all states: move over for emergency vehicles, or slow down.

Earlier this summer, Trooper David Avila was seriously injured on when a tractor-trailer driving too close to the shoulder rammed his patrol car and then hit him as he was making a routine traffic stop on Interstate 70 in Washington County, Maryland.

According to Move Over America, 49 states have laws requiring motorists to either move over, or reduce their speed if they can't move over. The only state that doesn't have such a law is Hawaii.

In the last 10 years, well over one hundred troopers have been...

Obviously drivers are not remembering or practicing what was in their driver's manual, maybe they need to reread the manual to keep up on laws of the road. You always move over when an officer has pulled over a vehicle to the side of the road. I always find it easier to drive in the center 98% of the time, I am in no hurry, wherever I am going, I will be there when I get there, if they are closed, it's on me, I should have left my point of origin 20 or 30 minutes earlier.

You'd probably be surprised (or maybe not) at the number of people who drive and are ignorant of this law.

I was a "flagger" quite a while ago - just summer job for school - and way back then the cars did not run as fast as today but it could get pretty scarey then, I do not envy a flagger these days BUT I DO GIVE THEM SPACE AND A SLOWER PASSING BY SPEED IF POSSIBLE. You learn to appreciate what these highway workers face daily just to make a living.

some years ago on I-85 in Virginia had a posted speed of 65 for cars and 55 vehicles over 2 axels [trucks] and a posted law to move over for emergency vehicles, I must admit it was one of the best routes to travel
at that time.
the Virginia highway patrol was there to see that the laws were enforced.

I was a passenger in my friend's car when 2 police cars attempted to pass us. My friend's music was too loud for her to hear the sirens.

Turn your music down and be aware of your surroundings!!

It is dangerous along the shoulders. How would you like to change a tire with traffic a few feet away going at 70MPH?

In many states it is a law that vehicles MUST move over or slow down well below the speed limit when police cars are parked alongside the road.

It is really quite unsettling to be on the shoulder with traffic moving by at high speed while passing close bye. Sometimes you believe they are just trying to bully you because you are an easy target, Most states have laws addressing the problem but it does not seem to have any priority with enforcement at this time.

Remember a thread a few years ago talking about ambulances and emergency vehicles? Some places didn't have a law saying drivers had to move over for ambulances, and we actually had members posting they wouldn't move over for an ambulance because they didn't have to.
