In what's sure to draw the ire of many toll road commuters in not only Chicago, but all around the United States, an in-depth investigation by theChicago Tribune has found that the Illinois Toll-Road Authority raised tolls by 87.5% to start 2012, even as some employees collect tens of thousands in OT- all yielded from tolls you pay.

The top overtime earning employees in 2011 netted tens of thousands of dollars in their checks, and some collected as much as $39,041 just in overtime. Motorists should be outraged that the agency, and perhaps others across the U.S. continue to pay their employees six digit incomes by allowing such overtime to occur.

Gunnard Thompson may be one of the highest earning toll collectors in the nation...

Some toll roads are privatized and can raise the prices what they want, they also took over the lottery in Illinois and are behind on their payment to the State. If I hit the lottery, Im taking my money and runnnnnnnn.

Sometimes it's cheaper to pay overtime than go out and hire new people. The largest drain things such as toll roads turns out to be employee theif.

It would outrage me. It has be enough for me, though, that I have no intention of going to Chicago anytime in the foreseeable future and will try to steer clear of toll-ways if and when I do go.

If they have the work, good for them. The overtime may be cheaper than additional employees and benefits.

One of the private toll roads in San Diego had to be sold because the original company was charging too much and not enough people were traveling on it. The new owner's have dropped the price.

Like Chicago...The NYS Thruway Authority is trying to hike up tolls for truckers by around 50%. That's about an extra $30. for a one way trip from Buffalo to Albany.

This definitely doesn't sound like its above board so I hope there are some impartial investigations that change this.

Just one of the effects of companies refusing to add additional employees that they need.
I know a dozen of professionals who are disgusted with working conditions and management expectations for them to put in extra time.

Kinda the same situation with the local city bus line, TriMet. They were initially supplied with state taxpayer money and the organization spent lots of money for salaries and operations. The state government eventually required it to operate like a 'normal' business and TriMet had to raise rates.
After the steep rise in fuel rates a few years back, TriMet contracted with central and eastern Oregon growers to grow bio-fuels to have some kind of a price control for fuel purchases. Then the oil price dropped and that strategy has Not worked very well since then.
