That should save a lot of gasoline!! How did the 2012 number compared to 2011? It did not seem to make a difference in gas prices with 2012 having the highest prices ever.

This is great, could it mean that we no longer buy gas/oil from Venezuela or Saudi Arabia or Iran or Syria. Oh my!

So the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is probably down by a similiar percentage.

Tommyguns45 has a good point too. We waste a lot of money hauling kids around. Kids that live 3 blocks from our school are hauled to school on 45 passenger diesel buses where they are made to take P E for exercise. Those so fat they can't run are made to walk several minutes. A few years ago busses (in the interest of economy) would not pick up any child who lived less than 1 mile of the school. Times are good for some and not so good if you happen to be a taxpayer or out of a job.

That is god to see and would be less if most people with kids didnt have to hug them around to soccer games, practices etc or the school buses having to go up and down every road in town to pick up kids. What happened to old fashion walking to meet for the bus. We were in better shape back then.

Retired in mid-2009. Driving less because income is lower, gas prices higher.

Interesting - prices go up, driving goes down; lose your job, driving goes down; non-renewable resource, prices go up, bonuses continue on...

Could this have to do with the cost of gasoline? Everyone has been on a much tigher budget over the last several years.

People traveled less because they could not afford it ... no big mystery ... if you recall Americans spent a record percentage of their income on gas last year.

The only reason I am driving less is because of the lack of work!

Here's where the article gets stupid....
40,000,000,000 fewer miles a year divided by almost 320,000,000 million souls in the US= 125 fewer miles per soul IN THE ENTIRE YEAR!
You do the math yourselves but considering the country is recovering from the worst recession since the great depression, that is squat.
I mean really, what the hell is 125 miles less a year when the average person drives well over 12,500. Answer... less than 1 %. One less long car trip for a family of four on a long weekend perhaps A YEAR.

I wonder how this is known? For sure fuel usage is down but people are driving smaller cars and more efficient ones. So how do they know that this is true?
