Like a thief in the night, wind resistance is a stealthy intruder that saps your speed and murders your mileage without leaving fingerprints. The gentle murmur of air streaming over, under, and through your car belies the wind’s heinous ways.

Even if there’s no alternative to driving through Earth’s atmosphere, we can at least fight wind resistance with science. Aerodynamics—the study of air in motion—can lift our top speeds, curb our fuel consumption, and, if we’re smart about it, keep our tires stuck to the pavement.

Long before automotive engineers fretted over aerodynamics, aviation pioneers defined the basic principles of drag and lift. Inspired by birds and airships, early speed demons also toyed with streamlined shapes. The first car to crack 60 mph (in 1899) was an electrically

There has always been and will always be tradeoffs in the conflict between any vehicles necessary operating functions, aerodynamics, weight and user requirements. The quest for greater and greater fuel efficiency within each class of vehicle has led to the fact that today one cannot tell comparable sedans apart unless one is close enough to the vehicle to read the brand badge on the front or the model information on the back which is the direct result of the CAFÉ standard mandated by governmental edict.

The only remaining exceptions to this “sameness” within vehicles classes is the SUV and pickup offerings but even the unique looks still surviving in the SUV and pickup lines are fading fast. The principles of aerodynamics are the reason for the “sameness” as the various vehicle manufacturers strive to comply with the CAFÉ standards.

Good to see they keep working on this. No mention, though, of dimpled bottom plates. Maybe those don't work as well as the inventors thought.

By the headline I assumed footage of Wesley Snipes running after Patrick Swayse in that silly movie had been released.

But the article was really informative.

Interesting read.

I am always saddened when I see someone with limited means buying a vehicle and requesting that a wind foil be added to the rear at extra cost. They spend their money foolishly.
