A few weeks ago, Continental Resources (NYSE: CLR ) applied to export some of its crude oil out of the United States. The company is pushing for America to end its more than 40-year ban on oil exports so that it can get its oil into refineries that can better processes it. While there are a number of positives to be gained from lifting the ban, the recent violence in Iraq reminds us that ending the ban could end up being a very bad idea.

Eventually importing/exporting will lose its significance as the world becomes more connected.

If America wants to out do the stupidity we have already displayed by exporting gas and diesel the exporting crude would be the next big step. Instead of keeping the gas and diesel at home it is allowed to feed the world market and drive our prices up over 200 percent on a good day. So when we hear the profiteers saying that it would do the American economy good to export crude and natural gas it is true But!, it would really stick it to the real Americans.

They likely just repeated the press release from Continental Resources Jeff. The same is happening throughout print, web, and video media as proofreading is eliminated to save money.

CNN no longer proof-reads their own articles?
Do you see anything wrong with this:
"get its oil into refineries that can better processes it."

I agree we don't want to export. Less supply in the US tends to lead to higher pump prices. Purely supply and demand.

If we are continuing to pay a premium to IMport oil, it makes no sense to EXport oil.

Do not lift the ban on crude oil exports, and end record exports of refined products.

To achieve energy independence we need to...

Ban the export of both crude and refined oil.

Ban the export of natural gas.

Increase the use of our coal reserves, which are the largest in the world.

Build more refineries.

Build more pipelines.

Vote Republican.

Nothing is stopping the Chinese from drilling and exporting their oil. Keystone would only amplify that problem.

We should impose limits on the exportation of our refined petroleum products as well, to accompany those placed on the imposed on crude oil.

Agreed.

Not only should we not export US crude oil, we should not export any crude oil or refined oil fuel products, no matter what the original source.

You don't want to depend on oil from the Middle East. Saudi Arabia is stable but Iran and Iraq are bad news.

Same old crap, different day when it comes to price increase excuses from speculator vultures & aided by one of the most liberal media outlets, Clinton News Network. Meanwhile, the roller coaster ride of fuel prices under Oblamer continues amid all his lies, coverups, scandals, failed economic & foreign policies, abuses of power, gross incompetence, & major campaign contributions from Big Oil/Utilities. Working class taxpayers continue to be screwed at the pump, with our utilities, & with our taxes while Oblamer pushes his tree hugging, stimulus sucking, union dominated, out of control spending, ultra liberal agenda at our expense. Stop this madness in Nov 14 & start taking our country back before it's too late!

I'm not saying we should export our oil but just think of where we would be if the rest of the world had the same attitude about their oil.

If one good thing comes from this it is that our collective American memory will get some badly needed refreshing on why we need to be energy independent and why we need to embrace alternative energy sources such as hydrogen fuel cell technology.

Iraq should be an excellent indication of why our country as a whole should cut back on the use of petroleum as well as not exporting it. The spigots are wide open now and industrial use is at record heights ;)

I think CNN got it wrong again. Didn't Continental Resources apply for a permit to swap some light oil for heavy oil, most probably with PEMEX.
